MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Thursday urged Google to reconsider its decision to rename the Gulf of Mexico the "Gulf of America" for U.S. users, adding the country could file a civil suit against the firm if necessary.

As dumb as I think Trump's move was, this is some stiff competition for dumbitude. I'm at a loss as to what legitimate cause of action Mexico could claim against an American company for what names it displays on a map to its American customers.

Actually. It’s pretty smart. Someone has studied Trumps Legal trend.

Traditionally Trump files a lawsuit and makes a big deal on the announcement. Everyone says he is going to win. Everyone says it is an obvious decision.

Then a couple years later the case is quietly settled. Trump pays the other person and gets an NDA then declares victory.

Mexico by filing the lawsuit sets up Trump. He won’t be able to resist running out and complaining to the Press that Mexico is suing because they think the Gulf of America should be called the Gulf of Mexico. He will demand the Judge throw the case out. He will send out Tweets and such ranting as usual.

The Press will quote him and be able to print Gulf of Mexico because Trump said it without any repercussions.

Brilliant.

I see no connection here to Google. As far as I can tell, it would be an entirely frivolous lawsuit.

I don't think Trump's move was dumb.

The Gulf is surrounded by several nations, all of which exist on either North America or South America. So why should the Gulf be called the Gulf of Mexico when that is only one of the several nations in North and South America bordering on that body of water, as well as several Island nations within it? Mexico doesn't own it.

Trump did not call it the Gulf of the United States of America. He simply identifies it more accurately as explained above, a body of water that is bordered by both North and South America.

It was dumb because it was dumb. Not one problem was solved by "renaming" it. Complete waste of time.

He gave the children on the left something to occupy their time with while the adults get things done.

The gulf wasn't named after the country of Mexico.
Also, no part of South America borders the gulf of Mexico.

The question is will the next Democratic president issue an executive order renaming it the Gulf of Mexico? Will this just go back and forth depending on the party affiliation of the president?

Why are we thinking about nonsense like this? Because the zone is flooded with bullshit.

This isn't the first geographical feature that has been renamed by president.

So it's only a problem because this is Trump?

Why would it be renamed again? I didn't see any outcry over Barack Obama naming Mount McKinley Denali. And so far nobody's changed it back.

The difference between this and McKinley is:

a) Denali was the original name
b) McKinley/Dinali is in America. The US does not own the gulf of Mexico
c) There was a legitimate reason to rename McKinley as opposed to the the Gulf of Mexico, which seemingly was done for no other reason than to troll Mexico.

No the difference is that it's Trump. What does Mexico have to do with a Gulf of Mexico? Having the word Mexico in the name doesn't mean that it belongs to Mexico.

If we change the name of the state of New Mexico and Mexico got upset who the **** cares?

Nothing to do with Trump. The issue is renaming something that doesn't belong to America for stupid reasons. That would apply regardless of who the President was.

Again, the USA owns New Mexico, so it's not the same thing. Renaming an international body of water for no other reason than to troll a neighbouring country is stupid. It has no benefits and just antagonises an economic trading partner.

Trump was trolling, and they were dumb enough to fall for it.

For my part, I think we should start selling naming rights. Mount Taco Bell has a nice ring to it.

Nah. The next Democrat is going to rename Trump properties as Headquarters KKK. And all official documents will refer to it that way. Google maps and earth will have it listed that way. It will be great. Huge.

How many times was Mount McKinley renamed? Why would this be any different?
The Gulf of Mexico is an international body of water bordered by many countries. Trump, by renaming it, is inferring that America now owns it. Just like he want's Canada, Greenland, The Panama Canal and now Gaza.

Donald Trump is a delusional bully with kleptocratic tendencies. He's like a 9-year-old child on the playground taking the ball from all the other kids. He is, IMO, irrelevant.

You do know he signed an executive order and kicked the AP out when they called it the Gulf of Mexico. That isn’t Trolling.
LOL thats next level trolling. :ROFLMAO:

Mexico is not going to file anything substantial, no one issued anything that told Mexico to rename the gulf for their purposes.

No, it was definitely dumb, and only dumb people are applauding it.
