WASHINGTON (AP) — Senate Republicans are signaling that they will try to block — or at least slow down — a Democratic effort to create a 9/11-style commission on the deadly Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, threatening the chances of a deeper, independent look at the siege and how it could be prevented from happening again.

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell said Tuesday he is “pushing the pause button,” on the legislation to form the commission, which is expected to pass the House this week despite the opposition of House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy. That means the bill is likely to have a more difficult path when it reaches the Senate, where majority Democrats will need at least 10 GOP votes to pass it.

I don't think this was unexpected.

They needed 10 different investigations to "get to the bottom of" Benghazi, but cant be bothered to come together to investigate an insurrection that quite literally broke down the doors of Congress and put all of their lives in danger. The likes of McCarthy and McConnell are cowards and opportunists to the worst degree

The Benghazi reference is a good one. Thanks!

This is just Democrats trying to fire up their base.

I disagree considering his comments where he just about called Trump an insurrectionist after the senate voted not to convict at his impeachment.
I wonder what made McConnell retreat. Probably the same thing that is making the Democrats exploit 1/6 for their own advantage. Politics as usual.

Never let a crisis go to waste.

If you don't want insurrection being held over your head, have your tried not supporting insurrection?

No, it's not. Republicans are learning that if they dare speak out against the Dear Leader, they're out. So they're the Trump Republicans now just spitting out the Cultist Kool-Aid. Pretty much as expected.

There are some who support the Arizona Maricopa County election "audit" being conducted by Cyber Ninjas. The supporters have asked those who oppose the audit, "What are they hiding", "What are you scared of, something they may find">

Well how about those who support the "pause" to the 1/6 panel,
- What are the Republicans hiding?
- What are you scared of, Something that might be found out?

Some say the AZ audit must be done to ensure voters will have trust in the system. Well the 1/6 panel should investigate the event on 1/6. You know to ensure people have trust in our form of Government.

Benghazi, Benghazi, Benghazi... "I think that's worth examining. It is going to be examined" (McConnell direct quote.)

But a one term President tries to use the masses to stop the certification of the vote by overthrowing the Capitol... "slanted and unbalanced" (another McConnell direct quote.)

Of-****ing-course... hypocrites, all Republicans.

This is just Democrats trying to fire up their base.

No need to fire anybody up. The entire world watched it in shock on January 6.

And you have it backwards. McConnell's agenda is to sooth the sensibilities of Trump Nation and what they proved to be. It's a burdensome pattern:

- First the GOP pretended that there was nothing wrong with Russia interfering in our 2016 election on Trump's behalf, even with his campaign team holding secret meetings with Russian operatives and covering it up.
- Second, the GOP pretended that Trump didn't ask Ukraine to interfere in our 2020 election on his behalf.
- Third, the GOP pretended with Trump about a fraud hoax in order to steal the 2020 election.
- Fourth, the GOP declared Trump responsible for the January 6 attack, argued to hold impeachment proceedings until after he left Office, then declared that it was too late because he left Office.
- Fifth, the GOP now belittles the attack and pretends that Democrats are just trying to fire up the base.

The only partisan garbage that has always been going on is coming from the GOP; and it has absolutely everything to do with soothing the irrational sensibilities of the constituency who can't cope with what they support.

That was then, and this is now. Trump has tightened his grip on the party, and they all got in line - including McConnel.

They may not win the Presidential with Trump, but I believe they may take the mid-terms, at least the House and maybe the Senate.

You mean like Benghazi?
😂 😂

You know, if things were going better in the present, I doubt you'd be so obsessed with reliving the past.

2022 is coming up quickly, isn't it?

Yeah, it's not unusual that either of the two parties would do just about anything to win.... Like I said, politics as usual.

Whatever.

This is never going to end.

Ain't it the truth!!!!!!!!!!!!!
In four months Biden and his posse have managed to create a raging dumpster fire with everything they have touched. If I was a Democrat, I wouldn't want to talk about it either. And yes 2022 is just around the corner.

McConnell doesn't care about anything except pleasing the base and trying his best to keep some semblance of power with the Senate.
His speech blaming Trump for the Insurrection was his cowardly way of not voting to impeach him.
He knows that the 2022 elections are upon us. He knows that agreeing to this would make it more difficult to have Senators up for re-election in 2022 to ride the Trump Train.

I'm glad you brought up all of the stupid Russian crap. Democrats would like nothing more than to waste a few years and a few billion dollars looking into the protest at the Capitol and really do a deep dive into every Blueanon conspiracy theory proposed on DemocraticUnderground.

Talk about BS.

Look at what Biden has done to our economy....
