McCain's Veteran Benefit Voting Record

As much as McCain is lauded on this forum, particularly from some vet's who believe since McCain is a veteran, former POW and conservative and these 3 points bring them strongly into his camp I thought it would be interesting to look at 3 votes McCain made starting in 02/06 concerning Veteran benefits.

Tax Rate Extension Benefit

Official Title of Legislation: S Amdt 2735 to S Amdt 2707 to HR 4297: To support the health needs of our veterans and military personnel and reduce the defiit by making tax rates fairer for all Americans.

McCain vote: No

Additional Funding for Veterans Benefits

Official Title of Legislation: S Amdt 2634 to S 2020: To provide an additional $500,000,000 for each of fiscal years 2006 through 2010, to be used for readjustment counseling, related mental health services, and treatment and rehabilitative services for veterans with mental illness, post-traumatic stress disorder, or substance use disorder.

McCain vote: No


Health Care for Veterans Amendment

Official Title of Legislation: S Amdt 1937 to HR 2863: To ensure that future funding for health care for former members of the Armed Forces takes into account changes in population and inflation.

McCain vote: No

Unfortunately I was limited to these votes for Veteran issues but I have heard that McCain has voted against Veteran benefits 10 times since 2000. So I ask:

This is the man who would be President?

This is the man who would have our military in Iraq for 100 years?

This is the man who would be Commander and Chief?

Well from my pov, as a veteran, he can kiss my ***.

I agree, but understand that both, the Clinton and Bush administrations, never supported the troops either, and also screwed them in the process. This is an issue that crosses party lines, and should be unacceptable to everyone, no matter which side of the fence they are on.

To add a bipartisan flavor to this Obama and Clinton voted yes on all three. Simply put, and imo, conservative politicains can't be trusted to provide and protect our military and would rather rush to war and have our men and women in the Armed Forces faith death rather then provide substantive benefits during and after their service.
 
As a veteran I appreciate all of Senator McCain's efforts to control out of control spending. The knock-on effects of excessive spending, as we all know down inside, is the major problem this country faces in the future, not terrorism and not even illegal immigration.
 

So you don't think our veterans deserve the best health care that we can give them? I don't really understand where you're coming from. It's one thing to vote against some big welfare package, but quite another to not give our brave men and women their due.
 

If they wanted veterans to have the best healthcare, they should give us health savings accounts or vouchers for private hospitals and scrap VA hospitals. VA hospitals are garbage, and if anybody has ever had to deal with them, they see the inherent flaws in a government run healthcare program.
 

What do you think are some ways to improve them without scrapping the whole system?

Honestly, I don't know. Its government run, so its markedly inefficient. I think you have to involve the private sector somehow. There is really no motivation for quality care. Sure its our military, and some of the staff will do what they can, but overall as a facility/organization, there isn't any impetus for top notch quality care. In the private sector, you have the motivation of profit which drives service, technology, and quality of care to higher levels. there is no such carrot in front of the VA, so everything suffers. I personally take zero advantage of any VA medical benfits I am entitled to. I simply pay out of pocket until my health insurance kicks in.
 

Cutting spending should not result in the disgrace that is Walter Reed and other veterans hospitals. Giving back to our soldiers is not socialism. It is what we owe them for their sacrifices.

Getting government out of the health care business and simply paying the injured vets private medical bills would solve this problem. There is no real need for Veteran's hospitals or for the Veteran's Administration. Another uneeded bureacracy that just gets in the way.

What? Medicare? Hell no. If it were up to me there'd be no Medicare. Read my post again and concentrate real hard on the words you find there. Notice the order the words are in. The word order is important because the words when taken together from phrases. Yes, actual phrases that contain clues that you should be able to grasp as to the meaning of my post. Read the whole thing again scanning for whole sentences and I'm sure you can get it. Do it a often as it takes until you grasp it. Its really simple! I'm pulling for you.

Good, now the veterans want to play riddles instead of going directly with a reasonable answer.

Maybe the army wants that many veterans who are homeless to stay that way and never recover their reason...these veterans maybe can talk about something that they are not allowed (or have swore not) to say...

Maybe this or that, we can play riddles or just to invent situations about possible causes of the indifference of the army with lots of veterans.

Reality is that still can't be understood why the army doesn't make a greater effort to compensate better to several veterans who are having poor medical assistance and to others who have lost jobs, family, and more because they went to serve their country as an obligated duty fighting in other lands.
 
There was nothing reasonable about independent thinker's remark. It was out of any context that he could have been expected to derive from my post. He wants to play word games. I'm not going to make serious responses to that nonsense.
 


There's a new bipartisan GI Bill (put forth by Webb) on the table that McCain has not yet got on board with.....or will not, who knows?

How do you reconcile wanting the govt. out of healthcare but still want them to pay for it?

I bolded the important part. Isn't that essentially what Medicare does? Are there special Medicare hospitals that I am unaware of? And for argument's sake, let's say we don't use Medicare, what new bureacracy would you like to invent. The checks have to come from somewhere, right? How would they know if they were being defrauded? You would have to set up a new beurocracy for this program. Please tell me where I am out of line.
 
Medicare is the government, IT. Its government medicine, just the same as the Veterans hospitals. Did you not know that?

I have never seen a Medicare hospital. I thought it was like a government insurance, which is what paying the vet's bills would be doing. Are you going to answer my questions?
