Well, I guess rich folks gotta golf.......but parks and such have to close!

Bloomberg

Across the U.S. most restaurants, bars and businesses deemed non-essential have closed, and almost every American has been ordered to stay at home as Covid-19 cases increase and deaths mount. While states permit people to get outside and exercise, finding space for fresh air can be hard to come by, as authorities limit the number of people that can congregate, and where. National parks, beaches and recreation areas have closed, but in most states, golf courses are an exception. About half of America’s 16,000 courses continue to operate in 34 states as essential outlets for exercise and health maintenance.

I'm not rich by any means, so you can stow the class envy BS.

I have played 4 rounds since the stay at home order became effective, and I would golf every day week if I had the time.

You can blame local governments on this one.

Virginia Beach has the good sense to keep our beaches open for exercise and fishing as long as there is no gathering.

What are you talking about? I don't golf.

Golf courses are allowed open but parks have to close? That's the point I was making, and you take your "class envy" rhetoric and shove it.

Not all golf courses are closed.

It's a local government/citizenry issue which is something you fail to understand.

Your class envy is more than obvious.

Golf courses should be open on the basis that it is very easy to socially distance yourself while golfing.

When we do start opening businesses, it shouldn't be based on essential vs non-essential but businesses that can easily comply with social distancing. Restaurants and fast food places should all be open, albeit not at full occupancy. I wouldn't mind seeing the Cheescake factory open up at 1/2 capacity.

Agree, sort of, as one can fairly easily maintain social distancing in golf. But as to class envy, golf is sort of a rich man's game: use lots of land for a few hours a day, drive a cart, required in some places, unless you are a pro and have to walk, etc. A real sport. George Carlin had the right idea: homeless? Use golf courses for them! Actually, one could put those tiny houses in the rough. The residents could retrieve lost balls that bounce off their shelters. Win-win.

Golf courses are open so they can support the 19th hole.

Most 19th holes are closed except for take out.

They need to stay open so they can afford to maintain the course.

The average course maintenance cost is some wheres between 1 - 1.3 million a year.

The "Rich Man's Game" myth died when guys like Arnie and Trevino came along.

Municipal courses boomed in the 50's and 60's.

Nah, you just like to troll.

It makes you feel better.

A differing opinion is not trolling.

Being offended is no excuse to blatantly lie. But I guess one must have at least a shred of integrity to understand that.

One of my daughters is a nurse who is at home recovering from the coronavirus she picked up at the healthcare facility where she works. Another of my daughters who is very close in age and disposition to the nurse is married to a guy who owns a golf course. Their golf course is open and is fairly busy right now, even with many cancellations of groups from up north who are not travelling due to the virus.

That makes too much sense. I know there is no way I could take a walk in a park or golf without being face tot face with someone.

If there is one activity where you can stay 6 feet away from each other, it is golf.

Avoid the 19th hole and go in the bushes.

SIAP. Social distancing doesn't save lives. It saves hospital resources. Golfers on the course during the day may need hospital resources. How many golfers during the day?

Very true. I used to give tours in San Francisco, and as we drove by one muni course cpl golfers happened to be in the van, and they couldn't believe that this course overlooking the ocean and the Golden Gate was so spectacularly beautiful, that it was the city's, and even more the low green fees.
