"This is hilarious. My insurance company mistakenly believed I was driving my car when, in reality, I was riding the roller coaster The Beast at Kings Island," the man wrote. "Those red dots indicate where the app incorrectly assessed my cornering and braking skills and lowered my driving score."
"Take it on magnum xl200. I want to see how well your driving is on those triangular hills," one user wrote of the popular giga coaster at Cedar Point.
"Maam you’re going 100mp in a forest. Your insurance rate is going up," another wrote.
😂 They can take their safe driving apps and shove them right where the sun don't shine.
I guess stay away from dragsters. They'll cancel your policy pronto!

We rented a car the other day and the dash fussed at my DH when he was exceeding the speed limit. Not sure if it was a car feature or a feature installed by the rental company.
I told him to knock it off because the next time we rent a car, they'll probably charge us a higher rate.

To give you a sense at how some companies work, and especially insurance companies, I have a story for you. A few years back I attended a work event, a dinner, and at my table was a senior executive of an insurance company, a company whose name most people would recognize. This exec described how his company bought user data from two other companies, Facebook and Nest (the Google company that makes smart thermostats). The insurance company then merged and analyzed the two data sets alongside their own customer data. The specifically went after people who:
  • Went on vacation (inferred from Facebook geo location data).
  • Didn't adjust their thermostats while on vacation (Nest data time synced with the Facebook data).
  • Were customers of that insurance company.

Making the reasonable assumption that people who don't adjust their heating or A/C while away for weeks at a time aren't very worried about money, those are the people they targeted for an insurance policy price increase.

Some newer cars can read speed limit signs and will warn the driver if they are exceeding them

They were trying to pass a bill mandating such things.
Apparently they already do in the EU.

The insurance company monitors cell phones?
Another good reason I leave mine in the armrest.

Some US insurance companies offer discounts if you are a safe driver and install tracking devices to monitor driving habits. So in this case it is a downloaded app the insurance company can track driving habits with

Yeah but this case the driver was being tracked when not in the car. Must be the cell phone unless the tracking device is in the key fob.

If you voluntarily sign up for the app to supposedly save a few bucks for being a good driver.
I wonder if the app knows which seat you're sitting in.
It all sounds kind of iffy.

Cell GPS. But with the accuracy of it, there should be something with the app that determines whether you're on a roadway or not.
This coaster literally goes through the woods.

Those navigation systems on the dashboard know. The Grand Cherokee we rented in Nova Scotia had a screen with the local roads shown and named and a blue arrow representing the vehicle. Whether the ones in phones are that detail accurate, I don't know. It all left me behind long ago.
