With every failure, Donald has been bailed out and propped up to the point that he really believed he was a business success. People around him had to massage his ego and run cover for him because their livelihoods depended on it. Every one of them telling themselves that despite how many in Donald's past have been thrown under the bus, it wouldn't happen to them - until it did.

As Donald has gone smashing through life, unaware and uncaring of rules, laws, or social norms, he has both left a trail of wreckage and ruined lives, and had his own perception of himself augmented. He has never had to perform or measure up because he has always had a golden safety net to save him. It's actually no big surprise that he got as far as he did with the belief that he created it all himself.

But now the wheels are coming off. He screwed up the job of being president so badly there was nobody powerful enough to bail him out in the 2020 election. Naturally, he denied he lost; and invented the stolen election story. As the criminal indictments are closing in and the legal system he has exploited his entire life is focusing a huge magnifying glass on his digressions, he is flailing. His conned supporters are having an increasingly difficult time ignoring the warning signs swirling around him.

Donald's situation is becoming desperate.

More and more people are beginning to see it was never about making America great again (something Donald was given the chance to make good on but failed as usual.)

It is becoming increasingly obvious it was always about him.

It was always:

"Make Donald Great Again."

Perhaps Nancy Reagan had the best advice about that. "Just say no."

Well, of course, the slogan, stolen from Reagan, was always the opposite of his policies. The slogan always seemed to represent a con job - when trump made the country worse, when Reagan did, and when Hitler, who seems to have first used the slogan, did to Germany, though he seemed to 'make it great again' a bit in some ways - and terrible in others - before the war.

One problem is that Democrats weren't good at countering it - with trump or Reagan. What was Carter's slogan? Who knows? Hillary's, "I'm with her". Really?

In his mind he was.

Clearly.

... by the way, NIH, what they’ve done — I spent time over there — and I like this stuff.
You know, my uncle was a great person. He was at MIT. He taught at MIT for, I think, like a record number of years. He was a great super genius. Dr. John Trump.
I like this stuff. I really get it. People are surprised that I understand it. Every one of these doctors said, “How do you know so much about this?” Maybe I have a natural ability. Maybe I should have done that instead of running for President.

If only he had...

Donald might have killed fewer people if he was a doctor. But, of course, he would never have been able to become one. He cheated his way through school. He never read an entire book. And he was a serious behavioral problem. No way he would have survived pre-med, much less the full program to become licensed. He doesn't ever want to do the work to achieve the goal. His idea of being president was watching TV and tweeting all day.

If Donald were to suddenly perish without facing the most severe criminal charges against him his followers would turn him into a political martyr. Whenever and wherever they achieve power, they would name everything after him. Schools, ships, highways, bridges, cities, libraries, parks, theaters, stadiums, counties, airports, etc. Do you really wish to live in a world where every other thing is Trump this and Trump that?

It would be more appropriate if a federal prison were named after him. With him in it.

Yes, this is absolutely true because Trump isn't a politician anymore, not in the traditional sense. His followers view him as a kind of superhuman deity, a "god walking the Earth" or a "messenger prophet", like a David Koresh or a Jim Jones. So yes of course he would be martyred.
But he'd also be gone forever.

Let us make sure he only lives once and then his legacy truly reflects his character.
