Majority of Americans want Biden to consider 'all possible nominees' for Supreme Court vacancy: POLL
A new ABC News/Ipsos poll finds that a plurality of Americans view the Supreme Court as motivated by partisanship, while President Joe Biden's campaign trail vow to select a Black woman to fill a high-court vacancy without reviewing all potential candidates evokes a sharply negative reaction from voters.

The ABC News/Ipsos poll, which was conducted by Ipsos in partnership with ABC News using Ipsos' KnowledgePanel, comes days after the most senior member of the Supreme Court, Justice Stephen G. Breyer, announced his retirement at the end of the current term. Breyer's announcement provides Biden the opportunity to change the demographic makeup of the conservative-leaning bench.

I would agree. I have no problem if Biden chooses a black woman for the post. But he needs to makes sure that choice is made from a pool of all available candidates regardless of skin color, ethnicity, or gender.

If the POTUS doesn't follow EEOC hiring guidelines, why should corporate America? How could a supreme court justice rule on an EEOC Discrimination suit if that justice was hired from a pool of other black females with no other choices considered outside of that demographic?

It just seems odd to me that democrats, liberals or moderates could support this. I would expect progressives and alt-left nutters to support.

You mean like only choosing off the Federalist Society list and not going beyond that?

Unfortunately, he sold his soul to Clyburn to win in South Carolina. Clyburn was smart enough (not that tricking Biden requires a mensa member) to force Biden to announce it publicly.

There's too much value in adding a variety of perspectives to the bench.

Anyone who believes middle-aged and old white men can do so adequately for a diverse nation such as ours is a solid example that the additional perspectives are needed.

So true.

Nothing matters anymore than those two requirements.

So hang on to your hat!
Are you saying that there are no qualified black female judges?

If there are, why would you make such a stupid post?

I could care less what ethnicity or color any judge/justice is.

But saying a year beforehand that you are going to pick a black female justice is nothing but a big **** YOU to all the other minority judges and legal scholars.

The Supreme Court is one of the lynch pins of this nation and of vital importance to keep our democracy a functioning one. Competence and ability should always be the first priority when it comes to appointing a justice, not skin color, gender or sexual preference.

The fact that our president believes race and gender are more important factors to consider when choosing a nominee, than seeking out the most qualified person for the job, should trouble everyone regardless of their political beliefs.

Are you trying to say that among women of color there are no qualified individuals for the court? What exactly are the qualifications that you care about? Should there be a competition to see who is the most qualified?
On the other hand having a new perspective that a qualified black woman can bring is beneficial when our society is so diverse.

It was the way Biden announced it that turned my stomach. While campaigning in SC in 2020, and pandering for the black vote, he announces he will only pick a black woman as his SC candidate, and then finishes his statement by saying, "no, joke." Could he get anymore condescending toward blacks? Like he was doing them a big favor.

Just nominate a black woman and stop politicizing it.

Which minorities? We've got/had asian and hispanic.

How 'granular' should we get as we're still *starting out* on diversifying the bench? Should they still be representative of larger demographics?

Not at all.

What exactly are the qualifications that you care about?
Judicial experience, adherence to the Constitution, percentage of overturned decisions, sentencing consistency...

Should there be a competition to see who is the most qualified?
No... I just believe that a persons record, what's on paper, should be the #1 priority when selecting potential judicial nominees. Then after that any secondary or tertiary factors can be considered.

On the other hand having a new perspective that a qualified black woman can bring is beneficial when our society is so diverse.
Race, ethnicity, gender, sexual preference, etc... are just window dressing and have nothing to do with the law or presiding over a court. Our justice system operates under the credo that "Justice is blind", so the race or gender of a someone who presides over the Supreme Court is totally irrelevant.

I don't think that all African American women have the same perspective on everything. Your statement assumes that a black woman can be reliably depended on to have a specific viewpoint on legal questions. It also assumes that nobody who isn't a black woman could have that same perspective on legal matters. That doesn't make very much sense.

It's also an FU to the person who gets picked, because everyone knows she's a diversity hire.

Give the man the “win” and let him feel happy about it.

It is a non-issue.

No, not at all. You really dont understand this issue, eh?

No, it doesnt. You seem to be another that sees everything in black and white.

If what you claim is true...why do we have more than one person on the bench?

I suspect Americans felt this way when Trump limited his picks to the names on a list given to him by the Federalist Society. Much more discriminatory than Biden's criteria, btw.

But it didn't happen then and it won't happen now.

Americans must have a very naive view of the Supreme Court.

Many people only see things in white. Thus Trump's picks seemed just normal.
