The Providence Rhode Island School Board set up a system that would allow teachers, after 3 years of service, to qualify for $25,000 loan forgiveness programs. IOWs, they would pay that amount to teachers who had student debt. There was one caveat. You can not be White in order to receive this money. What say you?

Wait till you find out about minority business loans. Gonna blowed your mind up.

Few things get righties' underwear in a wad more than student loan forgiveness.

Sounds like it was money raised for that purpose by a private charity.

Sounds like someone's going to get a lot more than that from them when they win that lawsuit.

I disagree. EVERYTHING gets Righties' underwear in a wad. I mean EVERYTHING. If a teacher sneezes it's gotta be woke.
What say you?
What you posted does seem, on the surface, to be differential. HOWEVER, I have seen in my lifetime preferential treatment given to all minorities. So how do I react to that? Like a Rightie, and moan and groan? Nah, I get on with my life. YOU should try it some time.

True, but student loan forgiveness invites a special level of froth.

When the Providence School Board took ownership of any monies, that is public monies and they fall under the Civil Rights Act. As an FYI, when I first became a teacher, I bought a TV and video player for my classroom. I also purchased VHS tapes that were kept in a school video library. When I changed schools, I was told by the principal of that school that all of that "stuff" now belonged to the school. I was not allowed to take it. Of course, that was 40 years ago.

You could not help virtue signal. Hey, everyone, look at me. I am superior to Str8shooter. ROFLMAO!

... and your point? Can a public school board distribute monies based on race? Isn't that illegal?
Depends. It's unclear from the website if they are actually distributing the money, or if they are just making their teachers aware of a grant available from a private charity. The former sounds unconstitutional...the latter is more of a gray area. They are definitely playing with fire having this on the school district's website, and having the Google Doc go to a school district email address though.

This is a reasonable response, so Gatsby, you did GREAT. Regardless of who raised the money, once the School Board was given the money and placed in charge of it with stipulations that required district service time, it is public money. IMO, the Providence School District is going to get sued and lose millions.

Couldn't a white person just identify as "multi-racial" if they wanted to take money that was intended to increase the number of educators of color? Are they going to do DNA testing or something?

First of all, $25000 ain't squat when it comes to what they owe

And if that private charity decided to administer the program itself and repay the loans that way, it would likely pass scrutiny. However, the lead bullet point states "PPSD is offering loan forgiveness." Not the charity. Further, the disbursements "will be made directly to your student loan providers through the Rhode Island Student Loan Authority." RISLA is a governmental body formed by state statute. Because the loans are being repaid by monies provided to the state, and disbursed by it, the payments are plausibly considered a state action. That the funds were provided on the condition that "whitey need not apply" doesn't absolve the state of its responsibility to not discriminate in its acts.

It's private money from a non-profit.

They can give it to anyone they want.
