In comments all but certain to further stoke division among Republicans as the party battles over its future, the daughter of former vice president Dick Cheney said it was vital not to ignore the symbols of racism and extremism that were on open display during the January 6 riot at the US Capitol.

“It’s very important for us to ignore the temptation to look away,” she said.

“It’s very important, especially for us as Republicans, to make clear that we aren’t the party of white supremacy.”

Cheney has an uphill battle on this one, the Republican Party and anti American Donald Trump are inextricably intertwined with white supremacy and racism as demonstrated in the attack on the Capitol and more recently the move to curtail mail in and early voting

Yes, the GOP has become associated with the "Jews will not replace us" bottom-feeding scum.

The GOP has been courting some of the far right religious and other fringe groups for quite some time. The difference is in the past, GOP politicians would soften their rhetoric once it came down to the general elections. The problem they face now, is Trump channeled the grievances of not only those far right groups who feel constantly let down by the establishment, but he made them a focal point for the party simply by being forceful enough to have the GOP establishment kowtow to him for the past 4 years. I'm not sure how the GOP closes that Panodra's box.

Had the establishment GOP politicians served as a muzzle for Trump's worse impulses, then perhaps they'd have some more leverage now, but I don't see how they turn back considering Trump is continuing to be a political presence. My money is on him being a strong influence on the periphery and supporting like-minded candidates to fill Congressional seats for the next several years. I think the GOP needs to prepare itself for a hostile take over.

Anyone else remember in 2013 Bobby Jindal said that the GOP had to "stop being the stupid Party"? Obviously that plan is not going well if members are now pleading that they stop being the white supremacy party.

GOP is a flaming dumpster fire morally and politically. Politically, they’re completely out to lunch. Fighting against the covid bill cause “libruls” is a brutally stupid idea. Sometimes you take the bipartisan “w” and move on. The bill is super popular and yeah, Biden/Dems are gonna get lionshare of the credit. Such is life.

Yes. Mitch McConnell held Trump‘s political fate in his hands for his entire Presidency.

Instead of stopping the abuse, and asserting the authority of Congress, McConnell joined the cabal.

Of course, the cabal left Moscow Mitch high and dry in the end. But that was to be expected.

McConnell did survive Trump.

They’re fully invested now.

White supremacism was what Jan 6th was all about. The day the sore loser let loose a mob.

Now, the circle jerk is telling itself that March 4th is the next big day.

Lol, really miss cheney?

If the gop is not racist among other things, who can explain why ninety five percent or so of the gop's politicians are white males? Anyone? What percentage of the leadership is even white females?

Yep, and the question is for how much longer. McConnell had the leverage to keep Trump in check, but I think he made the political calculation that he could get a lot of policy items through while tolerating the theater. Now the show continues but outside the halls of government and in an attempt to usurp McConnell and those not toeing the Trump line. This will be interesting to watch unfold.

The devo GOP have gone from being the party of white people to the party of the white supremacist. A subtle difference, if to call it that, that more realistically is the GOP becoming more obvious to the world what they're all about.

Sorry Liz...the Hillary tactic (basket of deplorables) won't work for you anymore than it worked for Hillary.

Liz Cheney is toast.

Buh Bye....Liz. Nice knowing you. When your term is up, lets hope CNN has an opening.

Sad that this even needs to be said.

Are you opposed to purging white supremacists?

I would start with the Democratic party that Liz Cheney is going to have to switch to first.

I just love these people who refer to WHITE supremacists and yet will never name who they are. It's like the worst president of all, Obama, using the phrase, "SOME people say..........." and then going on some imaginary tale of racism or white supremacy or some other wrong doing. Same thing liberals do as well. Let;s ask this RINO just who she thinks are white supremacists in the Republican party.

@Thread OP.....Ain't gonna happen. The GOP is 'Conservative' for a reason. Trump put any doubt of this fact to rest with his openly, blatant racist rhetoric. I refer you tp his public proclamation a judge was 'unqualified' to reside over one of his many court cases, simply because said judge happens to be of Hispanic/Mexican ancestry.

That's what you got out of, “It’s very important, especially for us as Republicans, to make clear that we aren’t the party of white supremacy.”?

I see nothing wrong with that statement, in fact, Republicans definitely need to distance themselves from claiming any ties to white supremacy and no matter what anyone's personal view of the confederate flag or any other of a number of things that have been claimed by white supremacists, the facts are, they have been claimed by them and those symbols are more than merely a flag or an ok sign these days.

It could just be as it appears: defending white supremacy. At least, that was my take on that post.

We know who they are.
