I keep running into this annoying thing used over and over again, so I have two questions for supporters of this means of measurement:

1) Where do you place Augusto Pinochet?

2) Where do you place Peter Kropotkin?

A 2D spectrum is obviously better, though the Nolan Test sucks. The political compass is probably the best in existence, though I still disagree with some of its classifications.

i don't think any person who knows about the 2D one would argue that 2D is not better. there is no argument to be had here.

the reason we only hear about one dimensional spectrum on TV is because the government ( which is one with the media ) doesn't want you to know about the dimension in which its own power can be examined.

the government doesn't want its power questioned thus you get one dimensional spectrum.

People like using that simpleminded classification system because it allows them to identify authoritarian social conservatives/reactionaries with libertarians in favor of "freedom"-- basically a way for libertarians to justify their support for a political party which actively and gleefully violates the principles they claim to stand for, and for social conservatives to claim that they're really "the party of freedom".

As far as bull**** Libertarian propaganda goes, this is a close second to the blatant hucksterism of the World's Smallest Political Quiz. Orwell would be proud.
