The hyper-partisanship in here has become more and more hyperbolic (shall I say nasty?)

ANY topic, take your pick, either you LOVE anything Trump proposes or you are against it 100%

Critical analysis? Thoughtful consideration? Thinking down the line? Forgettaboutit.

Take this Big Beautiful Bill. Trumpers are positively lovin' it, again, without any critical analysis. Leftists are making it sound like it's doomsday.

Yet........... EVERY bill proposed or passed by Joe Biden had Righties screaming bloody murder and Leftists applauding.

I keep wondering what has happened to the mind set of Americans? Are they UNABLE to look at anything critically without the partisan lens?

The obvious answer is that Trump happened. I wonder. Isn't Trump just a symptom, not a cause, of your lack of civil discourse? Are there others to blame, like the media?

Which came first? That is basically the poll question?

One could trace it back to the Birchers and beyond, but Limbaugh was the beginning of modern right wing extremism, followed by Gingrich and faux.

Yes, I too believe the disconnect started well before Trump.

You seem to be talking about DP.

The answer to your question is...

Trump came first and then you and your ilk came along and started shitting all over the place.
If you read my poll choices, many of them talk about things before Trump. I know, we all know, you pop onto any thread that mentions Trump with an automatic, and often childish, defense.
The question is far broader than your simplistic response. I ask if it started with Trump but also suggested it started before Trump. BUT all YOU see is Trump mentioned and you auto defense system kicks in. It's pathetic, but also a PERFECT illustration of what I was talking about where some people can not give an answer that isn't hyper-partisan.

8. Other thoughts - hopefully not too partisan or nasty, thoughtful responses would be nice

Clearly beyond your capacity.

Catastrophic failure of our education system. Right wing media and talk radio all wanting to be Rush the Liar Limbaugh. YouTube douchebags with huge followings.

I'm not defending Trump. I'm just stating a fact.

Actually, it ISN'T "far broader". It really is quite simple, and I presented the simple facts.

I ask if it started with Trump but also suggested it started before Trump.
And you are wrong.

The hyper-partisanship here on DP didn't start before Trump.

Why hold only one party accountable? I agree partially with the media and talk on the right. But you must be living under a rock if you can't see that the left has taken over education at every level.

Did I say only one party was responsible for the dumbing down of America? Nope.

It doesn't help that, anytime someone posts a nuanced opinion, people on the forum wrongly assumes they are, and accusing them of being, 100% this or 100% that, with no actual evidence of that.

LOL, Americans weren't hyper partisan before Trump, sure sure. Maybe go back to the Obama years and see how nasty it was. To you EVERYTHING is filtered through a Trump lens. Sheesh.

Obviously. There is the rub. The ONLY time I have read anything that was 100% correct, was when SNOWFLAKE posted something.

I wasn't here back then, but I'll take your word for it.
Even when Biden/Kamala was in office, they could not stop with the Trump chatter.
Rent free.

???

Maybe you need to clarify. Are you talking about the US, in general? Or are you talking about here on DP.

As I said, I assume you are talking about here on DP.

1. It has always been there but we weren't aware it was there before social media

4. Let's be honest, this started with Fox News, and the MSM is doing the same thing

Thanks, but you really didn't need to go through all that cut and paste effort. A simple "I'm talking about the US, in general" or "I'm talking about DP" would have sufficed.

I was talking about BOTH, but I had to make the effort for your sake since clearly understanding was way beyond you without the clarification.

This is a debate site. We're only passionate about decisive partisan subjects. Every subject has a pro and con. A poster only has a obligation to articulate and present one side of the argument. It is expected that another poster will present the other side. The reason we can't reach or tend to an agreement is the fact that there's no right or wrong answers and most arguments end up subjective or philosophical. Translation: There are no easy answers. It's not the destination, it's the journey.

Oh...you were talking about both. Okay then, my comments are on-topic.

Thank you very much for THAT clarification.

moving on...

There was a time when the two parties could compromise and find common ground for the good of the country. It was exemplified by the fact that in Congress we had liberal republicans as well as conservative democrats. At one point an Eisenhower Republican was not so different than a Kennedy Democrat.

As soon as compromise became synonymous with capitulation, it was not coincidence that liberal republicans and conservative democrats became nearly extinct. Party purity became the rule.

The problem is on Capitol Hill. The hyper partisan tribalism that exists these days is a product of the lack congressional term limits. Most congress critters arrive in DC well intentioned and motivated to represent their constituents. However, once they have served a couple of terms and have been wined and dined by lobbyists for a number of years, they get drunk with political power and forget who they are supposed to be working for. They become swamp rats. And that applies to both major political parties. Some will respond with: "But, but, but, term limits are applied at the voting booths". The problem with that is they have built up an insurmountable campaign war chest and free public exposure that its extremely difficult for any new candidate to compete. The result is that many of the bastards remain in office for decades, with a few of them in their old age being wheeled in vote congressional votes in a wheelchair wearing adult diapers with staff telling them how to vote until they die. Examples: Diane Feinstein and Robert Byrd. Mitch McConnell is approaching that status as well.

I don’t know that anything is 100%.

For instance, I strongly opposed to Trump’s unethical and highly unconscionable personal history. I believe it makes him vastly unsuitable for any leadership position, let alone POTUS.

Yet I still credit him when he is right on something. The latest being the bombing if the Iranian nuclear facilities.

Yes, I too believe the disconnect started well before Trump.

Have you listened to this one yet?

People can still make the effort. Also, the question remains, how did this happen? Choices in the poll including "other."
