After 4 straight weeks with successively increasing new case numbers nationwide, we finally have had two weeks in a row with decreases compared to the prior week.

This pattern is seen to one degree or another in all the big-number problem states like California, Florida, and Texas, and even in Arizona.

It's too early to tell, but could we finally be starting to see a break?

Quick reopen everything, it is safe now

Have you not read the posts on this form nor seen the news. Face it, we're all gonna die.

I hope so. It all depends on if people are going to stop being morons, start wearing masks, and socially distance. People control how this spreads and whether numbers go up and down.

We have no two weeks of declines, and the Midwest is just getting started.

The fact that it is spreading into rural areas gives me pause.

The fact that we have not proven any long term immunity (that would help with "herd immunity" gives me pause.

I will feel more comfortable (in the short term) when masks and social distancing are the norm and large group gatherings go away and places like bars close until we can knock the numbers down to where tests can be done with rapid turnaround in the community - where tracking and tracing can actually matter. The fact that we are not doing that now is a clusterfudge.

Doing millions of tests a day means crap if the tests do not come back within a day. After that tracking and tracing (and quarantine) becomes a clusterfudge. We need to knock the numbers down by demand to mask and social distance. As much as I believe that school is so important on social/educational/health and human services level - I think those that fully open will put those communities in a world of hurt which will only spread out.

We have learned a lot since this began...but keep getting the national response wrong.

Crap..in the most irresponsible of all talking points, we even have a congresscritter proclaiming he caught covid from his mask . :lamo Does he not realize the harm he just caused???

Dr. Birx doesnt seem to agree.

Trump criticizes Birx for the first time after she issues coronavirus warnings - CNNPolitics

Seems to be what she believes also. She was clear...without increasing our protection measures again, it's not going away anytime soon

Yep, pretty much. It can either be a seesaw pandemic, or we can reduce it over a longer period of time; that depends on us.

The sad part is that everything could theoretically be open if everybody did their part from a safety standpoint.

I view opening schools similar to opening bars. The people can't be trusted to act rationally or smart. About 50% of kids going to school come from families who are not taking this seriously. There will be the kids who refuse to social distance or go around touching everybody. I think on campus schooling should only happen in areas of low infection rates. At risk teachers should just zoom into the classroom. There should be zero tolerance for safety rules.

I am seeing much more mask wearing. I do think things are trending the right way especially in the southern states. The numbers are high because it's all over the place right now.

Hi!

My data confirms your statement. Hopefully, the US is on the way to actually bringing this pandemic under control.

Regards, stay safe 'n well. Remember the Big 3: masks, hand washing and physical distancing.

DEEP STATE!

If everybody wore masks, socially distanced and abided by controlled lockdowns, we could theoretically eradicate the virus within 4-6 months.

That sounds like a bastard of a long time, but that's only because the human brain is usually pretty bad at investing.

I am seeing less mask wearing, but many stores and rec areas are enforcing either social distancing and or masks

We went the private beach/lake that our community has for the first time this past weekend. They only allow a certain number of guests at the beach at any one time. But driving around no one is wearing masks, the one time I went into Walmart 35% of people wore masks. The 7 Eleven mandates masks and so does Costco

Birx is pointing out that it is wide spread everywhere now which was not the case back in March. She's rightly concerned that people in rural areas may not think it's coming their way. She's also concerned about the continued big group gatherings..protests, rallies, house parties etc. A lot of places were shut down before the virus was a threat to their community. I think she wants people to know it has arrived. Many people are discouraged from the previous lockedowns and need to be made aware that this is different.

It would have been nice if 4-6 months ago they hammered this message. They could have dangled some incentives like if we do this now we can have sports, school, concerts(maybe), traveling and a much less wrecked economy. Instead they went with 15 days to slow the spread and another 15 days and so on. It's hard to motivate people with no hope or end in sight.

Well looks like new outbreaks in areas that have been deemed safe up till now.

Also this virus seems to ebb and flow like the tide

Hopefully people are wising up and following the advice of health care professionals in the most affected areas and we are seeing a reduction In cases

We have no two weeks of declines...

That's categorically false. These are the actual numbers:

Week Ending----Number of Cases
8/2--------------434k
7/26-------------460.7k
7/19-------------468.4k
7/12-------------413.8k
7/5--------------341.3k
6/27-------------268.1k

...and the Midwest is just getting started.

Evidence please.

It's all relative. I live in AZ where no one wore masks until recently. Now 90% of AZ counties have a mandate. I only do curbside at Walmart but it looks like everybody I saw going in had a mask on. I used to be the only one at my work who wore a mask but now all employees have to. I think the anti maskers numbers are dwindling so they are no longer safe in numbers.

I think people are starting to realize that not much is gonna open up until they start taking it more seriously. I think that as the virus more directly hits homes people will change their attitude.

In your own numbers there is no two week steady drop. Florida did not report their number this weekend due to the hurricane.

Watch the numbers in Midwest states, they are rising.

I sure hope you are right, we need to stop with the nonsense and grow up as a People, those fighting doing the right thing are why this is still as bad as it is.

You understand that 434 is less than 460, which is less than 468, right?

Florida did not report their number this weekend due to the hurricane.

Where are you getting this? I pulled the numbers directly from the CSSE dashboard, which includes numbers for FL for every day last week and the week before. Are you saying that Johns Hopkins is making it up?

Watch the numbers in Midwest states, they are rising.

You keep saying this. Where's the evidence?
