Let's be clear: The Trump administration forcing Jimmy Kimmel off the air is bad. Very bad.

No no. It's not an 'escalation' when a private business decides to censor a critic of President Trump.
It's the same thing as a private business censoring a critic of President Biden.

Wrong, Biden did not sick the FCC on FoxNews and/or threaten civil suit because they were not nice. Nor did Biden point at a FoxNews reporter and say "we should come after you."

Fail less... might help you.

This whole thing gives me whiplash. When the left was in power and "cancel culture" was at its height, I remember conservatives saying the same thing: "I mean, could you IMAGINE if we did the same thing!?". There are differences, of course, which is that the right organizes mostly from the top-down whereas the left organizes from the bottom-up. It's difficult to argue which is a superior form of organization given the incompetence of the current administration, but this certainly seems more ruthless and effective in the short term.

I feel some sympathy, but on the same hand people forget that 6 years ago you had people organizing to ruin people's lives because they said a racial slur in a Call of Duty lobby or something. America has always had a puritanical notion of enforcing social norms and it's generally served us well. If it's at all reassuring, people can be comforted by the fact that this kind of stuff isn't new and it, like most things, is a cultural moment which will pass.
I don't necessarily disagree, but what we're now seeing isn't cancel culture. Top-down cancelling is not comparable to grass roots cancelling. The former is authoritarian while the latter is democratic.

Social media can be powerful, but it's not the White House.

Of course they did. The Biden Admin actually a hired a censor to review and vett the news.

I agree, I'm just pointing out that this fits with how right and left conceptualize hierarchy and power structures. They're being consistent!

As for what's going on, I universally condemn the government engaging in any kind of "cancellation" of political enemies. Private citizens organizing to put people in a database or call employers is a different beast that there is obvious precedent for.

ABC pulled Kimmel off the air because of low ratings and complaints from advertisers and local affiliates. They didn't need encouragement from the feds to make an obvious business decision. Disney's stock has been circling the drain since 2021. It remains to be seen if they can continue to make smart decisions.

That isn't my claim, but then again we've established comprehension and literacy might not be your strong suit.

I have also enjoyed our back and forth and I appreciate how forthright you've been. Next time I'll know to provide you a link for Saturday morning cartoons instead of sincerely debating anything of nuance.
It is your ****ing claim. Own your slur embracing shit bro
Take good care.

Yeah, I get it. The hive mind tells you otherwise. CNN is out there saying Kimmel didn't *really* say what he said and ABC loves to lose money. The bees are buzzing.

If that's what helps you deal with a blow to the Constitution, then i wish you Godspeed.

Its consequence culture. The question becomes at what point do we draw the line and say this is too far?

Good luck getting a consensus on that….
We don't draw the line by ourselves. The Constitution draws the line and the SCOTUS is the final arbiter of that line. So far, the Felon-in-Chief and his sycophants in the administration are either grossly ignorant about the 1st Amendment or just don't care about the oath to be faithful to it and the rest of the U.S. Constitution,

I am just amazed at the MAGA's here on DP regarding their ignorance of the reach of the 1st Amendment.

This is me.

Who else is it??

THIS is why MAGAs were always so keen to insist they weren't fascist scum. They love the idea of Trump abusing the government and shitting all over the constitution in order to attack non-MAGA targets.
Yes. This is what gets them off the couch and to the polls.
This is what gets them wet.
This is what they feel is justice for the perceived injustices brought upon them by a 'woke' society.
This is what Fox tells them to think.
