Let us Just Say It: The Republicans are the Problem

We have been studying Washington politics and Congress for more than 40 years, and never have we seen them this dysfunctional. In our past writings, we have criticized both parties when we believed it was warranted. Today, however, we have no choice but to acknowledge that the core of the problem lies with the Republican Party.

The GOP has become an insurgent outlier in American politics. It is ideologically extreme; scornful of compromise; unmoved by conventional understanding of facts, evidence and science; and dismissive of the legitimacy of its political opposition.

Another do-away-with-democracy thread.

It must be the weekend.

Yes. Anyone criticizing anything about Trump must have their character immediately attacked.

"Let's just say it" we are all the problem, we've allowed polarizing political parties to rip the nation apart on just about every level.

The sentiment empowered progressives to take Democrats so far left they ended up lost in a haze of useless and hate filled identity political warfare, and the flip side of the same coin saw Republicans triple down on the white christian nationalism driving MAGA to the levels we see today.

When the extremes are doing the talking then everyone else is muted, and that is the ultimate problem.

They don't argue positions or issues. They merely personally attack anyone who attempts it.

This is what extremists do.

Compromise is not possible. It's their way or F you.

A country can't work like that.

That's BS.

Reasonable people argue issues.

Unreasonable people refuse to defend extremist positions but instead attack other people.

There is no America without dealing with the 30% of the country that doesn't want to play well with others.

Yet, those "reasonable people" have lost so poorly that we ended up with one of the worst Presidents in US history... twice.

Spare us the bullshit, the far left took Democrats to a point of questionable electability.

... and that is why the Democratic Party is becoming the Socialist Party. Also, that is why the Democratic Party is losing membership across the board.

This article is from 2012.

This is complete bullshit that maga and centrist Dems always push. Harris lost in part cause she was trying for the middle with her Cheney road show. Dems were punished for not sticking to their progressive guns. When you try to get Republicans out to vote, they vote for Republicans.

The socialist party isn't the one touting state capitalism.
You can't be serious! How many socialists who do not hide that they are socialists have to run as Democrats to prove the point? How many Socialists have to have Democrat endorsements to prove the point?

Who are the centrists you speak of?

You can't be serious, Trump just took a 10% state in a company. Or is this yet another moment when a conservative proves they don't know the difference between economic systems?

Not true. It is not far left to let people have the freedom to live their own lives as they wish.

Full freedom is a centrist position.

The problem is the right is not grounded in reality - and refuses to be.

The left wants reasonable immigration policy. According to the right, the left wants "open borders." But nobody on the left ever advocated for that.

The left argues their positions honestly. The right redefines the positions of the left and argues straw man.

That doesn't make the left "far left" just because the right calls it that.

There aren't any. They're just maga lite

Just so I am clear on this, as you see it there are only Democrats, or MAGAs, or "maga lite" to pick from?

(You guys sure that is a winning formula?)

Full freedom is a centrist position.

Nonsense, it used to be the opinion of Democrats that people live their lives as they wish. That is not really the case anymore.

Republicans are totally the problem because they do not want to argue honestly. They can't. They know if they do, their positions are ridiculous, absurd. So the right has to try to redefine things into some kind of alternative reality.

Climate change is real. The right knows that, and they know if they argue for not doing anything about it, it's a loser position. So instead, they back up and pretend the climate isn't really changing or try to claim humans are not the cause of it. The right essentially clamps their hands over their ears and refuses to acknowledge facts.

Instead of arguing issues, the right goes into name-calling.
