Basketball’s most intimidating drive starts gracefully enough, a serene beginning that belies a familiar, yet devastating finish at the rim that may have no equal in the N.B.A.
LeBron James creates a dilemma for opponents: to be or not to be physical defending him.
LeBron James’s blend of athleticism, size, strength and speed makes him an almost unstoppable force when he is driving to the basket. That blend is a major reason he is leading the N.B.A. in scoring at 28.5 points per game. His skills, which will be on display Sunday in Phoenix at the N.B.A. All-Star Game, have lifted the Cleveland Cavaliers (40-11) to the third-best record in the league.
James is 6 feet 8 inches, roughly the height of most of basketball’s small forwards, though he seems bulkier than his rivals at a weight listed at 250 pounds. Despite his size, James covers more ground stride for stride than almost any other N.B.A. player.

Who saw him play against two great defenders (Shane Battier, Ron Artest)?
He got shutdown on the stat line... It was his first game with no assists.

Would Kobe or Paul Pierce or Chris Paul or any of the other big-name players have done better in LeBron's situation?

Out of the 3 you named Kobe is the only one I consider better, in the sense of an NBA player. The others are great, but that doesn't make them a dominant force to be reckoned with. Kobe is one of the only players in the game that has the ability to answer any challenges at will.
Kobe, IMHO, is the 3rd best player in the NBA. Dwight Howard is unmatched at his position.
Who's #2?

1. James
2. Howard
3. Bryant
4. Wade
5. Paul
When i think about it, 1-5, that really should be the all nba team.
For number 5, Nash would be a good choice.
Its too bad Lebron James didn't become a football player. He was a highly touted receiver as a Jr. in Ohio, a talent rich state for HS football players, but didn't play his senior year to focus on basketball. Sure he'll make more money in the NBA and not have a potentially dangerous injuries to face, but with his skill, size, and athleticism out at the WR position, who could stop him?
