Las Vegas is a barometer for what is undoubtedly happening in other tourism dependent economies like Florida.

After doing gangbuster business in the post-COVID era, Las Vegas is in the midst of a slump, with the number of tourists down sharply as Canadians in particular avoid Sin City amid bilateral bad blood over trade.

The total number of visitors is off more than 11 per cent year-over-year, according to data from the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, one of the most dramatic declines in recent memory outside of the pandemic.

Canadian tourism to Las Vegas supports about 43,000 jobs in the region.

Local politicians have good reason to be anxious about the Canadian travel boycott, said Stephen Miller, an economics professor at University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

As the director of the university's business and economic research centre, he crunched the numbers and found Canadians contributed $3.6 billion US to the local economy last year.

Canadian spending supported some 43,000 jobs in the region, more than those employed in the manufacturing sector, Miller said.

Canadians are still traveling - choosing other international destinations and 'staycations'.

Here's where we're going insted of the US...

Travel spending jumped 148 per cent in Buenos Aires, Argentina, 137 per cent in Osaka, Japan, 112 per cent in Copenhagen, Denmark and 101 per cent in Curaçao in the Caribbean, according to Flight Centre Canada data.

Aruba, also in the Caribbean, also saw a 71 per cent jump in travel spending, along with Lisbon, Portugal at 61 per cent.

Meanwhile, Prague, Czech Republic saw an increase of 38 per cent, Barcelona, Spain saw 35 per cent, Dublin, Ireland jumped 29 per cent and spending in Cape Town, South Africa went up 27 per cent.

Trump caused the slump

Union leaders are referring to this as the "Trump slump"

Ted Pappageorge, secretary treasurer of Culinary Workers Union Local 226, has become the voice of worker anxiety in the city. His union represents 60,000 hospitality workers across Las Vegas and Reno, with 45% of its members being immigrants from 178 different countries who speak 40 different languages. "Our members are telling us that they're quite nervous, and that's why they're calling it a Trump slump," Pappageorge told the Guardian.

I think the slump will continue as long as Trump is in office so the job losses will be brutal.

I would suggest the downturn will survive Trump’s presidency.

Canadians are very aware that American hostility toward our country isn't limited to Trump.

It's not just Canadians who are ditching Vegas. Word of nightmarish detentions for simply appearing like one might be an overstayer is enough to spook any reasonable person out of coming here. There's also the groundswell of anger for what US policy is doing globally, tearing up decades - even centuries - of good bilateral relations with other countries. Canada and Mexico, obviously, but also Europe. There's also increased awareness of the US's direct participation of the Israeli genocide of Gaza. The US is just not a very popular country right now, and it won't be for quite some time.

Their governor is a maga arsehole elected by Latino men who crossed back over for the Dem. Sen. Cortez Masto, barely for her.

NV poaches two professional sports teams from Oakland giving them hundreds of millions in taxpayer 💰 needed for people.

Vegas is associated with trump, so how’s that working out for them.
America is saturated with debauchery in the form of gambling, alcohol, drugs, and more.

We're just not a serious country or society right now. I don't know when or even if that will change in my lifetime. If it does change, I don't know what that looks like. I just know the country you and I grew up in is, quite likely, gone.

Let's see how much pain that business owners in every industry can take because of Trump.

You know they're already losing sleep. I'm sure some have already laid off employees or dropped salaries or taken a paycut themselves.

Since I’ll be 72 later this year, I’ll never see a check on this Ginni Thomas Supreme Court, let alone the systemic, apartheid gerrymandering begun with REDMAP 2010.

They stood down because they knew many of their rank and file plant workers and members were xenophobic and homophobic enough to vote for MAGA Jesus.
The moronic workers in Vegas are another group who forgets who fought for everything they have.

Las Vegas shouldn't have tourists. Not when they do things like this to them.

So, what was the crime? Werling says he put $20 into a slot machine, unaware the previous player had left in 76 cents. Security approached, and Werling says he was accused of trying to steal the pocket change.

That's nuts! The poor guy has a criminal record now.

A machine that has a few cents (or dollars) left in it becomes unplayable then doesn't it. Does security stand around waiting for someone who doesn't notice to play it so they can arrest them?

And why would any judge not simply burst out laughing and throw this case out?

Yep, the hospitality industry probably get suckered by no taxes on tips. Now that they might get no taxes on tips, they just have one more little problem: customer business to tip in the first place.

We have plenty of great casinos in the midwest if that’s what folks want.
The real test will be when it gets cooler in Vegas and it’s 🏈 season.

Yep, foreign tourists and those in the US with higher incomes are the ones who fund Vegas. There's a very nice MGM hotel and casino right across the river, just off the Beltway, just outside of DC. I could go spend a Sunday afternoon there an take the Metro or Uber back here. Might be out $100 or so, but it beats going to an airport, dealing with the monstrosity that is TSA, and having to fork over Vegas prices for every damn thing from transit to hotel stays to dining (the real wallet killer - besides whatever you lose at the table).

It’s like, why should we forgive these union morons, and not just in Vegas.
Trump attacking blue cities only plays to the trump/miller race war with unions folks.

Kids are already back to school around here.
Both their parents are working and most everyone keeps a nice yard.
I watched both planets come up around 4:30 AM central today. Venus is brilliant.
