1) The recorded conversation between Los Angeles Councilpersons Nury Martinez, Gil Cedillo, Kevin DeLeon, and the labor leader was leaked in October.

2) Nury Martinez was immediately booted out as President of the Los Angeles City Council.

3) After the second day of the scandal, Martinez resigned from her council seat. A caretaker was appointed for the district until interim elections are held in 2023.

4) Daily protests at the city council are being held by Angelenos calling for the resignation of Kevin DeLeon, who was recorded along with Martinez and two others. Councilman DeLeon may be able to survive this scandal; he’s engaging the community with toys for the holidays, etc.

5) Protests for the resignation of Councilman Gil Cedillo have stopped since he lost his re-election bid, and will be out of office in January 2023.

6) The labor leader who took part in the recorded conversation resigned shortly after the scandal broke.

6) Los Angeles has the largest community of Oaxacans / indigenous Zapotecans outside Mexico. There’s a lot of anger around ethnic slurs and racist remarks made by Martinez.
