LA City Council Removes ‘Homophobic’ No U-turn Signs

It had to be a joke right?

That's what I thought as I read the headline.

But iis true, some nimrod was offended by No U-turn signs and the LA City Council made swift action.

Somehow in their warped minds these decades old signs were just waiting for the day that Gay's would find them offensive, so they had to be done away with.

And they wonder why we think CA is a lost cause.

===============================================

Los Angeles City Council has removed No U-turn signs from Silver Lake, claiming that they are homophobic.

How exactly is a road sign homophonic? Well, a long time ago there were some signs alongside the No U-turn ones that said ‘No cruising’.

They were considered to be directed at the gay community, and they were removed more than 20 years ago.

But that’s not enough, because the other road signs remind these people of the ‘No cruising’ ones… or something.

These signs were put up to protect gay people from STDs? Are you having a stroke? Lol what a ridiculous thing to try to pass off as a "thought".
Some might consider cruising in the early 90s an unhealthy activity. Is that a “thought” that’s never occurred to you?

Any excuse for a bigot, huh? These signs singled out gay people and it wasn't because they were "cruising". Stop making excuses for bigotry.

I asked you a simple question, was cruising a healthy activity in the middle of the AIDS epidemic, yes or no?

Since "cruising" means driving around aimlessly for leisure, and has nothing whatsoever to do with sexual activity, I'm unable to see why you feel the need to insert "in the middle of an AIDS epidemic" in there is if that matters at all.

Your own article in the OP explains everything we need to know. Neighbors were offended by gay people making U-turns to get to a gay bar, so the neighborhood petitioned to have these signs put up. There is no mention about there being any sort of traffic safety or congestion issues. Only a neighborhood full of Karens who didn't like seeing gay people going to a gay bar and wanted to make it more difficult for them.

I see of opted for willfully obtuse.

To each his own.

The signs "were installed in the '90s when neighbors complained about a gay bar in the area. They were essentially used to prevent people in the gay community from meeting up with other gay people."

The signs were not put up for safety. The signs were not put up due to logistical challenges of making U-turns. The signs were put up to satiate a bigoted neighborhood. So they serve no other purpose and should be taken down. Shouldn't have been put up in the first place.

So because people don’t want a gay bar in their neighborhood that makes them bigots? And because they don’t want gay people cruising their streets that makes them bigots? And if they don’t want gangs hanging around that makes them racists?

Yep. All day long.

And because they don’t want gay people cruising their streets that makes them bigots?
As I've already made clear to @NatMorton, the article said nothing about "cruising" or even anything related to traffic safety. That's a figment of people's imaginations, for some reason...

And if they don’t want gangs hanging around that makes them racists?
What a ridiculous comparison. Even worse than the silly "they were cruising OMG that's dangerous" bullshit. Do gangs and gay people pose a similar threat to innocent victims in a neighborhood? Give me a break lol I swear some people forgot their brains this morning.

If you think a gay bar in any way benefits a neighborhood it’s you that have forgotten your brain. Fact.

For the record..are "U Turns" illegal there or not?

How uninformed about this OP can you get? Literally, the newscaster linked in the OP says “… the ‘no cruising’ and ‘No U-TURN’ signs were put up in the 1990s to keep people in the gay community from meeting up with other gay people.”

Or is this just a clumsy attempt at gaslighting?

My mistake. The "no cruising" signs were taken down more than 20 years ago, so I don't know why "cruising" even entered this discussion in the first place. At any rate, my point stands: the signs were not to enhance traffic safety, they were to enhance bigotry. Invoking "cruising" is a dishonest attempt to reframe it as a safety thing.

No, I don’t think it was ever a safety thing nor was there any pretense as such. What residents did not want was for their neighborhood to become a pick-up joint for gay men during a lethal STD epidemic. Whether they had a the right to impose that limitation can certainly be debated, but it was never about safety.

They were installed in the name of public safety. Health and driving.

If people were making illegal u-turns at an abortion clinic maybe your anger would not be as public?

And they got deinstalled in the name of public sanctimony.
