Japan is going extinct, laudable as this one case is, it's not enough for their own country.Japan has a very strict immigration policy, which many people (including me) applaud.
But it is making some changes.
Last year 10, 493 people applied for refugee status based on various reasons. Japan granted such status to 42 of them.
The Japan Times website this morning reports that in 2018 for the first time a foreigner was granted refugee status because of the person's gay sexuality. The unnamed person had spent two years in prison in his/her country and upon release applied for refugee status in Japan.
Japan deserves a shoutout for this humanitarian decision.

Japan's Population Is In Rapid Decline : NPR
Japan needs to become a lot more open to change and take in WAY more immigrants than they are currently. Their baby boom happened before WW2, so all those people are dying now, which not even an accelerated birth rate would be sufficient to repair. Which is unlikely, given that Japan's young people are having the least amount of sex of probably any major country. How are they going to afford social services for the elderly if they don't get workers in who can earn an income and help provide for this society?
Japan is still one of the most xenophobic cultures left on the planet, with no real interest in any sense of multiculturalism (or whatever today's buzzword is to describe what more western cultures have been going through for decades now, if not longer in some cases.)
Japan granting refugee status to a foreigner because of being gay is newsworthy, but hardly an indication that things are changing for Japan.
Foreign workers is one thing, but it always comes with the caveat that the foreigner adopts Japan's culture and work ethic... not the other way around.
I highly doubt we are seeing the beginning of some trend here.
You are wrong, the Baby Boom happened after WWII.Japan is going extinct, laudable as this one case is, it's not enough for their own country.

It’s the size of California with half the population of the USA
Right-sizing the island’s population is a positive move by a well educated citizenry
0.4% acceptance rate is not commendable
Although accepting the incarcerated gay refugee was
The Japanese society is a monolithic one by choice
In my experience it impairs that nation’s ability to be creative while it advances social stability
What is this doing in the sexuality forum?
Kudos to Japan

While we're at it, and since this is the Sex and Sexuality forum, kudos to Japan for its erotic cinema!
Pinku eiga and Roman porno
(Not to be confused with western pornography inasmuch as images of genitalia and pubic hair are strictly forbidden in these Japanese films, and yet they achieve a level of eroticism unmatched in world cinema)

By the time I move back to the states I will have spent a minimum of 6 years living in Japan and they do many many things better then we do in the US.
Wow!
How I envy you.
1. You can walk down the street day or night, and you know that no one will attack you.
2. You can take sparkling clean trains, unlike the subway cars in New York City that are full of disgusting graffiti written by disgusting vandals.
etc. etc. etc.
Hope you'll be able to return to Japan soon.
Have a nice weekend!
after living among them for four years, i would have to say that their xenophobism is not exceeded by any other asian culture, and it far exceeds that evidenced by the people of the southeast asian culturesI would say they are no more xenophobic then a lot of other Asian countries I have spent considerable time in. they just are a bit more up front about it.
i will use the overused expression about the japanese belief that "the nail that sticks out gets hammered down" as applicable to this scenario. japan is a safe and efficient society ... as well as a xenophobic one rigidly adhering to the pastAnd to your 2nd to last paragraph I don't think it's a bad thing that Japan expects people coming to live in their country to try in fit in to their culture rather then expecting Japanese culture to bend to the wishes of their guests. Especially seeing ad Japan is such a safe and efficiently running society.
the japanese were the perfect audience for someone like Deming, who helped the auto manufacturers become state of the art by making consistent, incremental improvements. what we tend not to see emerge from the japanese society are innovative NEW ideas and approaches. that is what the USA and israel do well. i suspect being a melting pot allows such innovations to surface in a way not often found in japanBy the time I move back to the states I will have spent a minimum of 6 years living in Japan and they do many many things better then we do in the US.

It may not be exceeded but i think the Koreans match the quite wellafter living among them for four years, i would have to say that their xenophobism is not exceeded by any other asian culture, and it far exceeds that evidenced by the people of the southeast asian cultures

Because of censorship, or are you talking aesthetics?Japanese porn sucks.
Due to the declining youth population, Japan's parliament has approved a new immigration law allowing hundreds of thousands of foreigners into the country to ease labour shortages. From next April, foreign workers will be allowed to take up jobs in sectors such construction, farming and nursing. Under the new system, more than 300,000 foreigners could be allowed to work in sectors facing a labour crunch. Foreign workers are willing to take up jobs that native people do not want to do, which is similar to the Polish case in Britain. The number of Polish nationals in the UK reached 1 million in 2016. The number of foreign residents in Japan had risen 6.6 percent to reach a record high of some 2.73 million in 2018, which is set to rise further to 3 million after the new immigration law takes effect. But it is still far below Britain's 9 million.
