Koran burner Derek Fenton booted from his job at NJ Transit

You're totally missing the point, dude. If the government can fire a civil service employee, for excercising his right to free speech, today; then the government can throw someone in jail for the same offense, tomorrow.
That's the slippery slope free speech rides upon. If free speech is restricted too much, it results in censorship and tyranny. But if it isn't restricted at all it can result in anarchy, a return to the state of nature, and a life that Hobbes described in Leviathan as “solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short.” Finding a happy medium on the slippery slope is always going to be tricky.

Zilch about conduct outside the workplace.

There's no slippery slope. It's still the 1st Amendment. We all know damn-good-n-well, that is a government employee, be it local, state, or Federal, displayed, on public property, the Ten Commandments, that people would have a ****-fit about it; the same people that say this cat isn't protected by the 1st Amendment. Ironic, eh?

That's for venders.

Was he a vender or employee?

Well, dammit....I can't seem to find jack. If you can find something, please post it.

I looked, but can't find anything.

I'm sure the exact working will be made public soon enough.

Who said he wasn't protected by the first amendment? Thank God for the left leaning ACLU, eh? And yes, free speech is on a slippery slope since it can have restrictions imposed if the free speech causes harm. Likewise, free speech can be abused if there are no restrictions at all. That's why we have courts to decide these matters.

You whine when the government doesn't allow a display of the ten commandments on public property and whine for it to protect hate speech. Yes, how ironic.

Like said, if he didn't get his picture taken, his name and occupation in the paper... But, there it is.
