lets head on over to that beach. within about a 10 minute ride from home.. not the oasis , and not one of the tourist beaches. the locals never go to them anyway. at least not the natives.. arriving in the evening. always a parking spot here unless the height of summer. some newly constructed walkway , must be for handi cap access. lets go that way. waves are loud the tide is beginning its return. we ask two fisherman if they had caught anything.. . . yes a thirty pound drum. wow . walk on. the sky is getting dark now. distant lightning flashes illuminating the sky to the north with orange. ships lights in the distance . closer work boats thumping on the water. they must be trying to dock before the storm. walk a while longer. back in the car. the road takes us through the salt marsh . a mother fox and two kits quickly cross in front of us. the smell of the marsh on a warm evening. breathe

I live in Colorado, and as everyone knows...there ain't no ocean here.

Every year or so, I get the itch to leave. To just pack up and move to the ocean. Doesn't matter where. I just have to have the salt air, the surf, the fishing. If I can have snorkeling, that is a huge plus.

But instead, I take a trip to S. Padre Island. Spend a week there. I rent a condo in one of the oil tanks at the KOA. One year, I took my sons. On the spur of the moment, one morning, we drove up toward the north beaches. At the one we just happened to stop at we were just in time to see people release hundreds of baby sea turtles. Watching them scramble over the sand and into the water...what a sight!

Anyway, that takes care of my itch for another year or so. Then I go back to what has made me stay in Colorado for almost 30 years...no hurricanes, no tornadoes, no earthquakes, no volcanoes. I'm just enjoying the sun, dry air, the plains, the mountains...and yes, even the snow...while I wait for the apocalypse that'll turn the Midwest into an ocean and the Front Range into beach front property.

we dont have panoramic vistas. but beauty can be found in microcosms. in our area. there are unspoiled and undeveloped locations known only to the locals which will remain a secret at this time. some are preserved lands that allow public access

it happened once that we spotted some fires on shore from our ship, and could hear raised voices . we dropped anchor and cautiously rowed toward shore in the ship's boat. approaching stealthily we went ashore just to their south. they were easily observed and appeared to have no watch , or defensive perimeter. deciding that they might welcome us, we walked to their group and introduced ourselves. they spoke a strange form of english and very rapidly. they had these devices , like a box of some sort that had music coming from it. being controlled by another device held in their hands, that they would speak into.

they offered us some of their beer. we drank quite a generous portion. not wanting to arouse suspicion. we turned to our boat, leaving as covertly as we had arrived. a little offshore we spoke about what we had seen. one among us said he'd heard of an encounter such as this before.
