I got a question.

But before I ask it let me give you some background…

Story 1

Last June the cops called me while I was at work. Two kids had broken into my home and the cops found them inside smoking dope. They did $1,700 worth of damage to the house. During the trial:

1. My neighbors testified that they saw the kids break into the house.
2. I testified that they never had permission to enter the house.
3. The cops testified that they caught them in the house smoking dope.
4. The kids admitted to breaking in the house.
5. The kids fingerprints were found in the house.

And with all of that the judge found them “not guilty” and left me with a $1,700 bill that I don’t have the money to pay.

Story 2

Two months ago a couple of young men broke into my father-in-laws house and stole a couple of his guns. The cops caught the guys and recovered the guns. Two weeks later my father-in-law came up to visit us and was here for only about an hour and a half when he suffered a stroke that killed him.

The D.A. will be dropping the charges against the two men since there is “no longer a victim”.

Now, I tell you these two stories to tell you that I’ve just been summoned for jury duty for the first time in my life. And since the judicial system has been so kind to me and my family of late I really have no intention of cooperating at all.

Point of fact, you don’t get to sh!t in my house and then expect me to play nice.

It just ain’t gonna happen.

So my question it…

…what are my options?

First let me say that it is ridiculous that the "justice" system would treat you and your family in such a manner.

As for jury duty, you will have to show up, you could (but might not) get in trouble for simply not showing up. Just make it known that you believe everyone who has been charged is guilty and deserves the death penalty and I am sure the defense attorney will want to get rid of you asap.

Thanks. I am interested in just how far I can push my luck. I know I've got a right to free speech but that ain't what it used to be.

And I gotta a whole lot of built-up animosity to take to court with me that's coupled with a redneck, smartass attitude.

Well don't go in and make a scene, but you can politely make it known that you hold views that the attorneys would not want on the jury.

As a member of the jury, you could actually do some good and prevent other people from getting screwed like you did. The system may be terribly flawed, but the only way to make it better is to get in there and fix it. Ditching jury duty means that some other guy is going to get shafted because your idiot replacement can't find his ass with both hands.

Show up to jury duty, because that is the law. But once you are there, if selected for a panel, just say that you are a strict law and order guy, and if someone is arrested, they should be found guilty and sentenced to the harshest punishment the law allows. Even the prosecutor will strike you from the panel, if somehow, the defense attorney is asleep. After that, go on your merry way. :)

I actually spoke to the cop that arrested the kids who broke into my house after the trial. I told him and he agreed (since the judge let him go) that the best thing he could have done for our community was to put a bullet in the kids head and a gun in his hand.

It seems to me that if you want justice anymore you will simply have to take it for yourself.

The courts are there to protect the criminals and punish the victims.

But does anyone know how far I can push my luck in a courtroom without being found in contempt?

you must show up for jury duty unless you have some legitimate excuse. scheduled medical operation. military duty taking you overseas about that time, etc.
but once there you get to be yourself. answer the questions they ask
read the voir dire section here:

your answers will be given under oath ... say nothing that is inaccurate

and you were not given justice ... neither will your father-in-law's family, based on what is known thus far. justice is certainly blind but all too often also deaf to the truth

I just tell them I'm deaf Bubbers, when they ask how deaf I respond like a true English gentleman...........Pardon me;)

I actually had to serve on a jury about a month ago. The judge and lawyers go through routine questions to determine whether or not you possess any particular biases, about the type of case and about the legal process. They make sure you understand what burden of proof means, the principle of innocence before proven guilty, etc etc.

All you really have to do is tell your story in your OP, and tell the judges and lawyers (when they interview you; that's if you actually get chosen to be on the panel) you think you will be biased based on your prior experiences with the legal system. Then they'll ask if you will be able to separate your bias if you were to be chosen to be on the jury panel, so just say no. If the judge doesn't dismiss you, the lawyers will later on (most likely).

Personally I'd serve on the jury, juries are one of the most vital pillars of our liberty. I'd also make sure as hell I abide by the right of jury nullification.

are you old enough?

Well, I'd recommend that you tell the interviewer what you just told us. if you left a hot cup of coffee on the breakfast table, it should still be warm when you get home after being dismissed.

My sympathies about your Father-In-Law.

Iterestingly, I tried to drop charged against someone who had stolen from me once. At the time I would have prefered that he get treatement for his addiction than for him to simply fgo to jail.

I was told thought by the Prosecutor, that Grand Theft was consdiered a crime agains the State, and that whatever my prefrenece, or even whether I was futher involved or not, charges could not be dropped.

so it seems odd that charges would be dropped with your Father-In-Law's death.

Hide your biases and get someone off that you rightly believe doesn't deserve to be imprisoned.

That is the most effective way to do so.
I wish I had never revealed that I was against drug laws so I could have gotten this old couple off for possession of marijuana.

On second thought, if you really advocate murder and a cover-up as a reasonable response to a break-in and property damage, you shouldn't be anyway near a jury.

just tell them you hate criminals AND the justice system.

In my defense, there would be fewer break-ins with property damage if I was on a jury.
