Judges opt for a final end to Russia's death penalty | Europe | Deutsche Welle | 19.11.2009

A 10-year moratorium on capital punishment in Russia was set to come to an end in January. But members of the country's constitutional court have decided that, due to international agreements, the ban must stay in place.

As a member of the Council of Europe, which guarantees certain human rights, Russia is obliged to abolish the death sentence.

"This decision is final and may not be appealed," said Constitutional Court president Waleri Sorkin, adding that international agreements made any alternative "impossible."

Although the country has signed the European Human Rights Convention, this has yet to be ratified by the Duma, Russia's parliament.

That is good news imo. Could it be that Russia will some day join the EU, too? I think that would be great:)

Russia may well have decided to ban the use of the Death sentence however it still uses the death sentence to remove those who pose a threat to Putin and his puppets.
Russia as part of the EU. mmmmmm not a happy thought, but perhaps the Russians would be happier were the EU to become part of Russia.

For sure the Russians will refuse to cede any sovereignty to any other nation or group of nations.

Now whether anyone can persuade the Estonians, Finnish, Poles, etc etc etc to permit the (barely civillised) Russians to once again hold sway over their lives, well that is quite another question altogether.

I think Turkey would be better suited joining the EU and bring about far more benefits than Russia ever could or would.

Those Ruskies will never change their ways, whether they are communist or capitalists; there all the same. Its in their blood to be different from the mainstream rule and political thought process. They dont play by the usual rules and that can be a problem. Their too wild and independant for the EU. And way too large.
