"Lee Greenwood’s song “God Bless the USA” has long been a staple of naturalization ceremonies for immigrants to the United States, but John Oliver thinks it’s time for a change. So, will the help of Will Ferrell, he’s created an alternative.

To close out his show on Sunday night, Oliver reflected on his own immigration process to the U.S., which indeed ended with a music video for Greenwood’s song. The presence of it got Oliver curious, so he dug into the details of how it came to be a piece of the ceremony. As it turns out, the government began using it on their own, and when Greenwood found out, his team forced the USCIS into a settlement deal that now sees the singer get $700 a year for use of the song. Naturally, Oliver mocked the move, and most of Greenwood’s attempts to monetize, well, everything, including attempting to trademark the phrase “God Bless the USA.”

Oliver was particularly amused by Greenwood releasing a version of the song for Canada, in which he didn’t really change any lyrics of the song beyond the ones that referenced America.

“All of this is to say, for multiple reasons, I’d argue Lee Greenwood’s song should never again be played at citizenship ceremonies, because they deserve one genuinely unique to this country,” Oliver said."

Replace it in what way? Delete God bless America from everyone's mind?

Are they the same song? God Bless the USA and God Bless America? I know the latter because Kate Smith used to sing it before Flyers games but I don't know the other one.

What is God bless the USA I don't guess I've ever heard of that now that's a line in the Star-Spangled banner. But the name of those song is the Star spangled banner or the national anthem.

Was that what they were talking about?

I don't know. The report said, "Lee Greenwoods song". God Bless America was written by Irving Berlin.

Who knows? Never heard of "God Bless the USA".

If you can stand it.

It was a hit with the George W. Bush crowd. You might remember his criminal presidency

"Holy shit I just remembered the Coors....that stuff's American."

I wish Farrel would do a take off on Trump. He has the look......

Ask the Native Americans how they feel about god blessing the genocide carried out by the white Euro 'christian' invaders when they claimed this piece of land for their own. But the present day white nationalists love this song so there's that.

So I'm going to ask replace it as what?

I've heard of Jimi Hendrix and do All along the watchtower and that's about Dylan song and even that didn't replace it. I'm sure there are Bob Dylan fans that like Jimi Hendrix and vice versa.
Some folks think Kate Smith's "God Bless America" as from another era, which it is. But they're both unofficial "national anthems" just as "My Country 'Tis of Thee" and "America the Beautiful" are).

"God Bless the USA" has been an anthem for quite a long time now. There aren't too many songs since the '60's and "Green Berets," and I think that there is always room in the national musical repository for another patriotic song.

Like this one from WWI:

Back in the day, instead of having someone sing 'The Star-Spangled Banner' before home games the Philadelphia Flyers used to get Kate Smith in to sing 'God Bless America' sometimes. The word was they never lost a home game if Kate Smith had sung. I don't know how long that lasted though.

I like this song too. All sorts of people do. Spare me a screed about DWEMs.

Well the one part of me gets that because the Star-Spangled banner is a difficult song to sing not that I'm some fantastic singer but I have been in choir and I have been I canter.

That's one I would always pass on I'm a baritone so it would have to be a duet if I sing it at all. I can't hit the high notes.

But then another part of me thanks the only reason we sing patriotic songs at baseball games is military propaganda. What is that such a bad thing I'm not sure.

Thanks. I didn't know that!

I remember all the old news reels of her singing this, always in a long gown.

The Fightin' Texas Aggie Band has been performing the theme from Patton ever since the movie came out. We're very military-friendly here.;)

I think it's ridiculous. They used to sing "God Save The King" in theatres after the movie. Imagine proposing bringing that back? If sports teams abandoned the national anthem for one season and then someone suggested bringing it back they'd get shouted down.
Do we really need to reinforce our patriotism every time a crowd is together in one place? I mean, feeling kinship with those around you is all nice and snuggy but forcing it is counter-productive.

Thanks. I didn't know that!

Old news reels?
Sucks when stuff that was current events in my lifetime is history to other people!
Ah well, getting old is still better than the alternative.

Dead White European Males? Don't get it.

Songs that glorify killing don't appeal to me, but then I don't subscribe to the American exceptionalism creed. I like this kind of music.
