One of the country’s largest manufacturers is worse off now than it was six months ago. Last month, John Deere said net income in its most recent quarter was down 29 percent from a year earlier. Higher tariffs, primarily on steel but also on aluminum, have cost the company $300 million so far, with nearly another $300 million expected by the end of the year. This summer the company laid off 238 employees across factories in Illinois and Iowa.

I wonder what changed 6 months ago.

So much winning.

Happy MAGA.

If they want to maintain competitiveness in the global market, they have only one choice- move more manufacturing to their offshore facilities to avoid the tariffs.
Putting tariffs on raw materials is so stupid that one wonders how any politician could be so incompetent.
This is the second time Trump has done it.

Thanks to Maga, Trump and Project 2025, these Americans are losing their jobs.

Sad!
"Foreman says there's jobs are goin', boys, 'n they ain't coming back
To your hometown!'

John Deere has lots of facilities offshore that can pick up the slack. They won't be able to sell equipment in the US, maybe, due to the tariffs but they can stay competitive in Canada and Australia and Europe and South America and everywhere else there's farms.
Tariff raw materials- export jobs.

The challenges John Deere is dealing with are hobbling every manufacturer in America. No company can absorb increases of 50% on steel, aluminum and copper.

This unforced error that essentially takes America right out of the global market is a boom for every other country in the world that has a manufacturing base.

Gee it would really suck if an anti-woke good ol boy place like John Deere get ****ed in the ass by Trumpco.
I mean, it won't suck for me, but for all of those trying desperately to pretend what is happening IS NOT HAPPENING!!
Last time Trump did this, when he tore up NAFTA, Harley-Davidson farmed out manufacturing to their facility in Thailand.

Canada has a number of large agricultural equipment manufacturers that already have a mature global export market.

Their new marketing blitz should be "buy from us, we don't have a batshit crazy government ****ing you around".

John Deere the swine that make it to where farmers can't fix their own equipment so you have to wait for a technician to come out pay them thousands of dollars to have the privilege of using something you own.

**** John Deere I hope they go bankrupt. Anti consumer swine.

Their bad consumer practices are more responsible for their situation and I say good.

Better Japanese and Chinese technology have been eroding Deere's edges for decades. Kubota especially is yanking the chain

When lived in the midwest we all took the line "Nothing runs like a deer..." and added "Nothing smells like a john

We should not be here, if people have an issue with John Deere business practices then their success or fail should be based on consumer response. Going after the bottom line for John Deere via tariffs is about trying to control business practices in terms of supply buying and manufacturing location, this has nothing to do with maintenance or machine monitoring practices.

Ultimately, Trump used tariffs as a wedge against large scale domestic manufacturing to control and when that failed use them as a cash cow knowing the costs would fall on the consumer and the worker. In this case farmers and John Deere employees.

Trump and his winning... at the expense of America, in multiple ways.

Cat's not looking so good either.

WINNING!

Their "bad consumer practices" aren't new. The tariffs on their raw materials are.
It doesn't seem like anything special that nobody else has to deal with and aren't struggling to the same degree. It isn't just John Deere. Apple is one of the worst and I own 2 of their products. I used to own a John Deere too, and when it broke down I could fix it or get my neighbor to fix it if I couldn't. That is too much to ask now.

For the last few years John Deere has been undermining farmers by not allowing them to repair their own equipment.
Do you really think the average farmer can repair a GPS guided combine?

Could you repair the technology on a high end Cadillac?

Yes and I used to be able to repair anything under the hood of a car. Now they are just too technologically advanced for my wrench skills.

Only matters if you buy one of those. You don't have to. Thus the decline.

I think it's now impossible not to buy one of those.

Sure we can change belts and stuff but repairing the safety systems and other advanced technologies - not possible.

It's the same for Farmer John. He can replace any mechanical part but the sophisticated technologies inherent in large equipment will always be beyond his skill level.
