NEW ORLEANS — With a victory that defied political geography and near universal predictions from just months earlier, a previously little-known Democrat, State Representative John Bel Edwards, soundly defeated United States Senator David Vitter in a runoff election on Saturday to become the next governor of Louisiana.
Mr. Edwards won 56 percent of the vote with virtually all of the ballots counted.
In the weeks between the two elections, Mr. Vitter tried various tactics against Mr. Edwards: warnings that he was an “Obama liberal” in Blue Dog clothing; provocative attack ads accusing him of wanting to release “thugs” from prison or of being dangerously uncommitted to keeping out Syrian refugees; and personal ads in which Mr. Vitter obliquely addressed the prostitution scandal by saying he had been forgiven by his family.
Mr. Vitter, for his part, was a problematic candidate for Republicans, even though he had been widely seen as the favorite for months. A prostitution scandal from 2007, the baggage of an unpopular Republican incumbent, Gov. Bobby Jindal,

Vitter was thought to be a shoo-in just a couple of months ago. Love this next bit:
The Obama smear and the appeal to the base fears of people didn't actually work this time. That's the republican mainstay of demagoguery. If they can't get their rabble roused with that right after the Paris attacks, this could spell disaster for them next year.
And then, this:
The state's finances are in shambles, which is always the case when republicans are at the wheel driving their clown car into the ditch. I think we're seeing the beginning of yet another round of severe buyers' remorse around the country in states where voters swallowed the republican snake oil yet again over the past several election cycles.
Honestly, in Louisiana it makes little difference if you have a D or an R next to your name. The politics and the elections are usually always a mess.
So is Jindal quitting?
Same state that had a Mayor Nagin. :lamo
Yeah, he forgot the drivers.Yes I still call him "school bus" Nagan. Because he said ah I'm gone have all them buses filled with people and outta here before Fema even gets here! And days later you see like 100 school buses under water parked in a field.

This is a referendum on the failed policies of Boner/McConnell.

No, it's a referendum on whether the people wanted a pervert in the Governor's mansion. A different Republican running would have beaten Edwards. IMHO, supporting Vitter was a huge mistake for Republican voters.
Yes I still call him "school bus" Nagan. Because he said ah I'm gone have all them buses filled with people and outta here before Fema even gets here! And days later you see like 100 school buses under water parked in a field.

He was term-limited and could not seek re-election.
where were those filled buses going to go?
It is interesting that when it advances the DNC theme they like to talk about how those "Red" States in the South are so backward and obese and dumb and all that. The truth is that Louisiana, like all of the Southern states, have a long history that continues of supporting Democrats. In the past 60 years, Louisiana have had 9 Democrat and 4 Republican governors. The last 8 have alternated basically. Dem-Rep-Dem etc. I guess the people get tried of one and try the other. No biggee. Although sad that there are only 30 Republican governors now.
Nice job of laying this all out.
I can't agree with your hasty overgeneralizations however.
I am curious about what the exit polls have to say. We need to know that before we can anecdotalize.
Nagan never specified. Where were you in 2005? lol. I was here. He said he was going to get citizens who had no transportation out. Specifically the 9th ward. But of course he did not do it.
I love all the people slamming the republicans on this election. The fact is if Edwards was a republican he would be in the middle of the pack as far as conservatism goes. So acting like they went against republican polices in this election just doesnt hold any water. Louisiana chose the best candidate regardless of party affiliation and that says a lot more about the poeple of Louisiana than it does about democrats or republicanst
and that was because FEMA/michael brown, dubya's appointee, had not designated a destination for those filled buses
brownie was too busy making sure his shirts were ironed properly
so, why was it the mayor's fault that dubya's appointee was incompetent?
Nagan didnt hafta wait for W... The MS governor didnt wait on him... Local officials in other areas did things and didnt wait on the feds.. Then after it was all over and they got their asses handed to them they pointed the finger and whined and complained that the feds didnt do enough to get them out. They made that a media event for basically a full year after Katrina. The point is they coulda and shoulda helped themselves and did a better job on the prep work. The feds had no time to move in and do anything before it hit. And besides that shouldn't be the fed's job. The states spend all kinds of money on crap, and they are right there on the scene and know the population better. But no, we gonna wait on feds and them blame them since its George W in office. I guran-damn-tee you that if Obama would have been in office. The propaganda campaign would have been a lot different.
