Washington (CNN)Joe Arpaio, the Republican former Maricopa County sheriff known for his hard-line immigration tactics, says he's running for Senate.
"I have a lot to offer. I'm a big supporter of President Trump," Arpaio told the Washington Examiner in an interview kicking off his campaign. "I'm going to have to work hard; you don't take anything for granted. But I would not being doing this if I thought that I could not win. I'm not here to get my name in the paper, I get that every day, anyway."
Arpaio was defeated in the 2016 election after 24 years in office as sheriff. He was convicted last year of criminal contempt for defying a court order to stop racially profiling Latinos but was pardoned by President Donald Trump, whose presidential campaign Arpaio had supported, in August before serving any jail time.
Arpaio told supporters in a fundraising email that he'd filed the paperwork to run in Arizona's late-August Republican primary.
A guy that just took a pardon is going to run for the senate?
When will the RNC stop insulting America?
I'm sure the dems are salivating at this corrupt sack of human excrement running for the seat.
Trust me, he isn't going to run. He has done this so many times, teasing about senate, house or governor. I have to imagine that a 3 way primary between Chemtrail Kelly, the elderly convicted felon, and Martha Mcidiot would be fun to watch. All three of them killing each other, wasting millions of dollars attacking each other while Krysten Sinema just sits and laughs and destroys who ever wins the primary. Arpaio is 85 years old, his wife is not well, and he is not all there upstairs these days. He is doing this whole thing as another corrupt way to get money from his whack job fan base.
The joys of living in AZ.
They already are salivating at the prospect of the complete wingnut "chemtrail Kelly" running.
This state has some real crazy assed folks in the GOP.
My aunt in AZ is a very enthusiastic Arpaio supporter- she was part of his volunteer outfit. She's delighted by this news.
She must be in the late stages of dementia if she would enthusiastically support a convicted felon.
She's a sweet lady. Always nice to me and sends me cactus candy. Plus she carries a Glock at all times so it ain't a good idea to mess with her.
How a sweet lady can support such a vile man as Arapaio is baffling. My guess is that she spends too much time relying on propoganda websites...
