Rent control is a demonstratably failed policy.

A better way to supply housing is to remove barriers to construction, such as zoning requirements and certain other requirements, such as off street parking, setbacks, etc.
 
Let's see how much rents rise. How many people get evicted. Too soon to call this a success.

We seem to have a different problem with the number of cost burdened renters hitting an all-time high and rental stock having significant investment needs.

People couldn't afford rent, so more apartments became available.

The housing supply isn't really increasing substantially. There are just more vacant homes because people can't afford it.

If the housing supply was truly skyrocketing, then construction jobs would not be crashing.

If no one is building new homes, new homes aren't being built.

Housing supply skyrockets could just as easily be homeless population skyrockets.
 
Meanwhile tiny less than even hotel room spaces go for 2k a month rent in new york. Yay freeberty?

Rent control stays. It keeps greed in check.
 
So new builds or people had to leave the city as they could no longer afford to live there.

Given the time frame I suspect the latter was the biggest influence rather than the former.

Exactly. To claim the housing supply increase alone is the success is pretty daft when not factoring in what happens to the people affected by rent control.
 
The cold truth....

For there to be an increase of 192% in rental housing supply means that there was rich owners who were sitting on housing supply with no tenants and no income.... let that sink in.

Sorry, but zoning regulations are most draconian in Progressive districts. The hypocrisy is in full display.

In all fairness, the vast majority of cities are very liberal, even cities in red states. Houston has virtually no zoning but elected the first lesbian mayor of a major city in the country.
