Trump just announced a very weird trade deal with Japan.

What Japanese company would invest in the US in an environment where they have to hand over 90% of their profits to the US government? How is this not socialism?

If the details are accurate the Japanese PM should resign.

I'm lost. Give me a clue... Why on earth would you think anything Trump says remotely resembles the truth?

Numbers get snatched out of the air with Trump!

4 years of Chaos

"President Donald Trump said Tuesday on Truth Social that his administration had reached a deal with Japan, one of the largest U.S. trading partners, to lower its tariff rate to 15% as part of a sweeping trade agreement.

That rate is lower than the 24% that Trump threatened Japan with on April 2 and the 25% he said he would hit Japanese imports with in a letter on July 7. Before Trump’s current term, the effective U.S. tariff rate on Japanese imports was less than 2%, according to World Bank data."

Sounds like the price of the Switch may still be going up.

So he negotiated tariffs from 2% to 15%, a cost to be borne by American consumers.

This is economic madness.

Yeah, read that yesterday. I'm not clear on what that means at all regarding the profits.
For some reason, investors think auto stocks are a great deal right now because of this.

JAPAN. DOESN'T. PAY. THE. TARIFFS.

Jesus H Christ......

So all American manufacturers have to pay tariffs of varying degrees, from 25 - 55 percent, on raw materials, parts, assemblies, sometimes entire vehicles, before they can sell their products but Japan skips all that and its distribution network in America pays 15% at the border?

That doesn’t seem fair.

Tell Mycroft.
If Japan auto companies ship autos to the US, consumers won't buy them because they are too expensive. They'll buy from other companies. Japan's only alternative is to build the autos in the US, sell them with zero tariff and then turn over part of their profit to the US government or to reduce their prices. That's the agreement.

Evidently, Japan thinks it's better to make SOME profit than to not sell any cars.

You think American automakers aren’t paying tariffs?

This era could not be more stupid.

This era doesn't happen without stupid voters.

Seems like Trump has a 10% tariff baseline that he wants on all imports as a means to raise revenue for the federal government. Thats not a bad thing and it will help with the deficit, but I dont think its high enough to bring much manufacturing back to the US.
