Japan went MAGA and defunded a United Nations’ women’s rights panel, which urged Japan to change its discriminatory imperial succession rule, under which only males can inherit the throne. There is nothing wrong with having a queen or an empress to represent Japan. Queen Elisabeth was much better than her male counterparts in recent history. Japan only banned empresses in the late 19th century when the country was rapidly militarizing to project power.

TOKYO -- Japan on Wednesday said it will freeze voluntary funding for a United Nations’ women’s rights panel that called for an end to the country's male-only imperial succession rule.

The unusual step comes in response to a report published in October by the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women, or CEDAW, urging Japan to revise the male-only succession rule under the Imperial House Law to allow a female emperor.

The 1947 law, which largely preserves conservative pre-war family values, only allows a male to succeed to the throne and forces female royal members who marry commoners to lose their royal status.

Japan on Monday informed the CEDAW that it will be excluded from a list of recipients of the country’s annual voluntary contributions, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Toshihiro Kitamura said.

The government sought the U.N.'s Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, which manages CEDAW, not to use Japanese contributions for it activities. Japan will also suspend a visit to Japan by committee members planned by the end of March, Kitamura said.

Japan won't make that mistake again. If you can't stand the answer, don't ask the question.

The UN's Woman's Rights panel should be worrying more about women in Afghanistan then a minor issue such as this.

Funding is never a minor issue.

Feminism in the first world is a "minor issue"?

A couple of points.

1) Given that the Japanese Imperial Family is increasingly sparse, it might not last more than a few more monarchs anyway. A lot of the family members are just asking to leave the succession to go live normal lives. When Naruhito dies, his brother becomes Emperor, and then his Nephew, and they don't really have a plan after that.

2) Given the role is largely ceremonial, and has no power, it could just as easily be replaced by a President. (which is what Germany and Italy and Israel do, with the real power being with the Prime Minister.)

3) Japan is still very much a male dominated culture. So is China, for that matter.

Japan should really consider changing the line of succession or they risk losing the monarchy anyways. Right now the heir of Emperor Naruhito is his brother Fumihito, and Fumihito has a son: Prince Hisahito. But Hisahito has no brothers. The line has become quite thin. There is the emperor's uncle Hitachi, but he is born in 1935. Hitachi has no children. All hope is on Hisahito having sons, because if he only have daughters, or no children, the Japanese Imperial Line is dead. So maybe allow Empresses in the future, would certainly add people to the line of succession.
