Cops handle these things.

If the governor thought it was out of hand, HE would have called the NG.

Is Trump handling this effectively in terms of reducing violence? No.

Is Trump handling this in such a way as to give him a political win? Probably yes.
 
If ICE was attempting to apprehend individuals that had warrants issued by a judge, then methodology was working as designed. I also would expect the Gov and Mayor to not want help given their history so their statements do not surprise me. When you have a large number of people surround a federal building and threaten people and property then that is begging for a response which in my mind is the goal.
 
These types of things happen in many developed countries. Vancouver, London and Paris are a few examples.

Police departments are always able to get things under control given time and resources.

Using the armed forces against American civilians isn't a good look. But it's from the Authoritarian's Playbook.

Think about the countries who use the armed forces against civilians. They're not good company.

Did you feel the same way on Jan6 when rioters rushed the Capital. Some waving Trump flags?
Was it a Disgrace?

I do not understand those waiving the Mexican Flag in protest of ICE. I also question Trump's approach to removing illegals from the US. First it was going to be just the bad criminals. Now it seems even good workers who are here illegal are being targeted.
 
For Trumpers, ANY action he suggests are good actions.
For Trump "haters" any action he takes is Fascism.

To credit Mycroft (who would have ever have thought they would see the day) as long as they are protecting federal buildings and NOT engaging in crowd control there shouldn't be a problem.

I am more worried about the calling up of the Marines. To what end? At the point where the National Guard or the Marines start engaging with the rioters/protestors, there is where the line needs to be drawn.

Yet, for folks like Mycroft, despite the credit I just gave him, if force was being used on a civilian population by the NG or Marines, there are those on the Right would support this.

I would venture, AND I wouldn't be far off, that if a protestor/rioter was seriously injured or killed, some would rub their hands in glee (though none would admit it) that "we got one of 'em."
 
Interesting how Trump hasn’t dispatched the National Guard and Marines to Texas - there were a bunch of protests there in Austin and Dallas yesterday over ICE raids

All good questions. I'm sure there is no one in city,state politics who might have some advance knowledge of federal activities who wouldn't dream of passing on that info.

Waving a Mexican flag (or any other flag) isn't a crime, and something an American citizen can do without legal repercussion. Burning cars and looting are against the law and should be prosecuted whether or not someone is flying a Mexican flag (or any other flag).

Wasted opportunity to deploy paratroopers to land right in front of the protestors and show them who's the bawse. I hope it wasn't because the governor is a political ally and he didn't want to overstep....

Yeah, that's nonsense. Police in large cities have plenty of resources to routinely handle large events, such as protests, parades, street fairs and more.

If we followed your logic, then every big city should have National Guards and Marines show up every St Patrick's Day.

There is no question that sending military to LA isn't an "effective" way to handle protests. That isn't even the goal. It's just another authoritarian power grab.

I think it's a no-win situation for Trump but a win-win for those who are fanning this. Anything Trump does that can viewed through the lens of force will perpetuate the narrative that he wants to be a dictator, etc. will be a win. If they withdraw their efforts to protect federal property and personnel along with abandoning their efforts to apprehend people who aren't supposed to be here, then it will be seen as a win for those standing up to one of his policy initiatives.

I mean, in terms of handling the deportation, pretty much anything would be better than "because I said so, and here come my goons"...hehe... Are you suggesting that Trump has lost his past marketing / negotiating skills, to where all his initiatives will result in riots? Does doubling down by sending in the national guard and threatening to send the marines make this likely to end any better?

You're doing that thing you do where you refuse to answer a simple question because it forces you to admit something rather obvious. How about a simple yes / no to the question in the OP? I mean, if you think this is all going to work out tickety-poo, why even consider other solutions? The conversation begins with your assessment of the current state.
 

I tend to agree, while refraining from giving my opinion on whether or not that narrative is valid.

"worse" is a matter of perspective. For Trump, the best thing that could happen is all out revolt with ALL the accompaning violence. This would 'prove' Trump right, allowing him to justify and assert even more authority and control.

MAGAs will cheer this.
 
I suspect people that get all in a tizzy about this have never lived in or near a large city

I wouldn't, but I'm sure some would. Just like many Democrats celebrated Ashli Babbitt being shot and killed.
