Mediaite reports on an Iowa voter who asked if she could get her ballot back once she learned that Mayor Pete is gay. Oh, my. I know that there are some (only a few, I hope) who vote on the "cuteness" factor or who will vote strictly on gender/whatever, but how could this woman have not known? Watch Iowa Caucus Voter Find Out Pete Buttigieg is Gay

I don't ask for a partisan reason, and I hope others won't try to make this thread a partisan insult-fest. This isn't about a party; it's about truly uninformed voters on all sides.

I saw that earlier and, basically, there is no specific demographic or ideology that's immune from idiots. They come in all shapes, sizes, genders, races and beliefs.

What we do know is that many blacks voted for Obama in 08 and 12 simply because he was black. Many voted for Trump in 16 simply because he was white.

That is the fact. Politics is very tribal.

Honestly, why did they vote for him and not know? That's like the second thing i ever heard about him.

Of course this thread started out partisan. Don’t be fooled by how it’s dishonestly camouflaged. It’s not a coincidence that this Republican OP dropped as soon as Iowa results were known.

This OP is a passive aggressive attack on Buttigieg for being gay, which we all know will be a centerpiece of the vicious and sleazy smears against Buttigieg coming from trump and his supporters.

It is all over the news.

Exactly.

Not the way this OP was worded, but I’d expect nothing more from you than to cover for this ‘independent’ poster.

Does it matter? It's her vote to cast as she chooses for whatever reasons she chooses. You and I may consider those reasons petty and choice stupid, but its her vote and she consider her reasons and choice as very valid and for her vote her opinion is the only one that counts. So why should I care or even fuss, as what would be the point?

I....don't see anything resembling an attack in the OP?

It's kind of amazing anyone who would want to participate in the caucuses wouldn't know a fairly basic fact about one of the front runners, but that is the world we live in. A lot of people don't care to take the time to pay attention.

Since you are the one turning it into something it isn't meant to be, we'll leave you to continue on.

You couldn't be more wrong. I'm not dishonest, I'm not a Republican, and I have never posted a single homophobic post on this board. I'm also not going to let you project your own malice, ill will, and nefarious intentions on me.

My concern, as my thread title suggests, is the uninformed voter. How could this woman have not known that Mayor Pete is gay? How many people are going to show up at polls with this little familiarity with the candidates?

That begs the question raised in another thread. Why is Iowa so important?

A "first" can be compelling, and I get that. But I was thinking more of JFK and the "cuteness" factor because there really were a lot of women who said that's why they voted for him.

Open your tv listing schedule and peruse the network shows between 8 PM- 11PM, M-F.

Honestly, why did they vote for him and not know? That's like the second thing i ever heard about him.

Looking at it from her eyes I can see her point. Pete doesn't gush over his husband, he doesn't kiss him in public and he doesn't really bring him out to events or to major speeches. He barely mentions the guy and if you were just a casual TV News watcher, you wouldn't know who he is.

That's what I mean. Why take the trouble to vote if you are genuinely this clueless? I don't know what down-vote issues will be on the Iowa ballot, but is this woman just going to whimsically cast an uninformed vote on something of real significance (and then probably complain about it later)?

I'm sure the Des Moines Register will publish a few days in advance of the election its recommendations, accompanied by explanations. My state's newspapers do, and I study them. Reading a proposed change in the law as it will appear on the ballot isn't usually very helpful to me; I need to know what it really means and what the impact will be. In the case of this woman, she didn't even have to read a newspaper to know that Mayor Pete is gay, only turn on the tube.

This is not just an American problem.

On the night of the historically momentous Brexit referendum vote where the UK voted to pull out of the EU, the most commonly googled question in the UK was apparently "what is the EU?"

I don’t speak for the OP. I think the point is that there are many examples of voters voting with little to no information as to why they vote the way they do.

well this Trump supporter has no problem whatsoever with him being gay.

his would be policies though, I have issues with.

I think you should care because knowing what and who you're voting for is responsible citizenship.
