DC pizza chain under fire over ‘racist’ dessert named after former mayor

The wife of a controversial D.C. mayor isn't happy about a dessert named after her late husband

"For a good time, it’s the powder that’s the ultimate headline grabber. The Marion Berry Knots have enough powdered sugar that will have customers bumping elbows to order and even force the DEA to look twice," &pizza announced in a press release.

"We’re talking about a marionberry, that’s spelled with an ‘e’. We stuff that into a knot, drizzle it with icing and then top it with powdered sugar. It’s delicious – we can’t wait for D.C. to try it," &Pizza CEO Mike Burns told the Washingtonian in a statement.

"I just think it’s racist. In this city, it is outrageously racist. You can print that. It’s racist and disrespectful," Cora Masters Barry, Barry’s wife, told DC News Now. She said she wasn't contacted by the pizza chain about the dessert.

I remember watching grainy, black and white film of Marion Barry in a hotel room with half-naked hookers. Oh, and he was sucking on a crack pipe. And he was mayor fo D.C at the time.

I don't think it's a racist. What does it have to do with Barry being Black?

A Black and White film is about as divisive as you can get. I think Films of Color should be accorded positive discrimination. And that any called Colored Films should be No Screened.

You are a city that elected a crackhead as mayor. That's something dc has to live with. Both Barry and dc earned ridicule for that.

Now, the question is, what are they saying about their target audience thinking that this will appeal to...who and why...

I can't imagine anything positive about that.

Also, the "wife" a a dead guy is normally referred to as a WIDOW. man what passes for writing these days.

Chalk it up to our snowflake find something to be triggered by culture we have today, this does not read as if the intention was racism in basis or even insulting. But that does not matter in the current social and political climate now does it?

No. It’s not racist.

If you only view the world looking for racism, racism is all that you will ever see in the world.
Seems the OP is suffering from exactly this, and inventing racism where really none exists (he must be short on his quota this month).

Oy. Um, the OP said it's not racist. Your post betrays a lazy lack of reading comprehension. But hey, you do you.

Things or actions can't be racist on their own. Only people can be racist.

Would the pizza shop owner have done this if Barry had been white? We will never know for sure.

I have a feeling he wouldn't have though, so yes, i believe that the pizza shop owner is likely racist. Why else bring something like this up in such a stupid way?

Look at all the publicity. Free!

What is the source of your "feeling" since nothing in expressed by the owner steers in that direction?

Whites and Blacks tend to look at racism differently.

Not racist but completely uncalled for.

That is of course the case. Some 'Blacks' can use so-called racism as an excuse for sub-optimum performance while 'Whites' cannot.

🤣 Look how they market them. If you don't want to be known for smoking crack, don't be a high profile person like the mayor and get caught smoking crack. 🤷‍♀️ I don't find this racist.

Many of us, not least me, sometimes write 'uncalled for' things. And why shouldn't we? Self-censorship detracts from free speech.

Yes, its so unfair how blacks use racism against whites. When will our suffering end? :)

Maybe if the shapes were of little KKK knots like the Bed Bath and Beyond candles and they named them Marion Berry KKKnots.

Tacky? Yes
Racist? No.

That depends. Some attribute them to neurons reacting to stimuli which is then cross referenced against memories, and others think they come from the "heart".
:)

So pick whichever one you like.

It’s not like I respect your opinion any more than I do anyone not ashamed to say they support Trump at this point.
