The term "Moor" is not specifically racist or an insult, it's just a bit outdated. It can also be used inaccurately, as it is a Western term for a specific group of North Africans. (I.e. it doesn't mean "all Muslims," it refers more specifically to Berbers and other Arabs that conquered Spain.)

However, "Moor Street" or "Moor Station" could start getting a little iffy. Plus, different societies will draw the line in different ways.

Consider the following:

Negro Street
Black Person Avenue
White Boy Road
Muslim Lane
Lutheran Boulevard
Gringo Way
Goyim Station

These terms aren't all pejorative or highly insulting on their own, but as a place designation, it's probably not going to fly.

It's a latin contraction of "Mauretanian", so I don't think so.
But then again, from a etymological perspective the N word isn't either, so who is to say... I guess it depends on cultural use and history.

Exactly.
It just means "black".

Paradoxically, here in Germany the relatively harmless word "Neger" is now "verboten" - just because the N-word is "verboten" in the US.
Now in Africa there is a whole county called "Niger".
Maybe soon naming this country by its name will also be "verboten"?

Niger or the Niger[12][13] (/niːˈʒɛər/ or /ˈnaɪdʒər/;[14][15] French: [niʒɛʁ]), officially the Republic of the Niger,[12][13] (Hausa: Jamhuriyar Nijar, Fula: Renndaandi Niijér, Arabic: جمهورية النيجر) is a landlocked country in West Africa named after the Niger River. Niger is bordered by Libya to the northeast, Chad to the east, Nigeria to the south, Benin and Burkina Faso to the southwest, Mali to the west, and Algeria to the northwest. Niger covers a land area of almost 1,270,000 km2 (490,000 sq mi), making it the largest country in West Africa. Over 80% of its land area lies in the Sahara Desert. The country's predominantly Muslim population of about 22 million[16][17] live mostly in clusters in the far south and west of the country. The capital and largest city is Niamey, located in Niger's southwest corner.

Do blacks call each other moors and we can’t?

I think nowadays hardly anyone calls anybody a moor.
It has become a historic word.

It is also a German family name in the form of Mohr.
I am waiting for the day when these families are getting attacked by "woke" Germans for daring to speak their own names.

I had never heard of the moors until recently. Weren’t they the ones caught with massive firepower in NJ or somewhere?

Come to think of it - what about the Yorkshire Moors?

The North York Moors is an upland area in north-eastern Yorkshire, England. It contains one of the largest expanses of heather moorland in the United Kingdom. The area was designated as a National Park in 1952, through the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act 1949.

When will woke Englishmen and Englishwoman and binary English persons demand the re-naming of those Moors?

I have not yet heard of it.
Tell me more about those NJ moors! :)

A cadre of armed men from a militia group called the Rise of the Moors shut down a highway outside of Boston for more than nine hours on Saturday morning after allegedly refusing to comply with police orders and taking off into the woods with guns.

The group says on their website that they’re “Moorish Americans dedicated to educating new Moors and influencing our Elders.”

Most interesting!
So the Moors are still alive and well and living in Massachusetts. :)

And according to their spokesman they have a treaty with the United States where they are not bound by our laws. They be exempt you see.

In German we make a difference between Moors and Moors:

Mohr: a somehow black person - or even a black cat
Moor: a part of the countryside similar to the Yorkshire Moors.

Because of the famous Moors in Spain, the term "blackamoor" was once used in Engish to denote a Black person and it was a derogatory term. But "The Moors" were a respected group in history (other posters have mentioned that they were Berbers, from northern Africa) and there is no need to omit references to them and their influence on Spain.

Funny! :)
One could make a game out of it. :)

As I asked elsewhere:
Black Cats are sometimes called "Mohrle = little Moor" in German.
I wonder whether this counts as racist now?
