When it comes to people in positions of power (politics, bosses, etc...), is respect from you earned or given?

Earned and only earned. I may respect a specific position as a given BUT the person must always earn it

Respect the positions of authority or those who provide services to the public. That's a given until they prove they don't deserve it. Individuals all deserve a bit of the same courtesy, again until they prove they don't deserve it. Some people deserve more respect than others based on their actions. There are lots of people out there that have abused the respect they were given.

Depends: in politics if it is a Democrat he has to earn the respect
If a Republican he should be given the respect.

Depends on the situation: in the military, respect is given. Even if you dislike the person above you - you respect the badge. In civvy street, I tend to sit back and observe the person's behaviour first.

I think you can start with giving people the "benefit of the doubt" until they prove they don't deserve it. Many people quickly show you they do not deserve any respect beyond being one of God's children. Some make that hard. I think some don't understand what respect actually is.

I was raised to treat my elders and those in authority (teachers, police, clergy, etc.) with respect. Others earned my respect and or admiration over the years while others lost it. Once I'm given reason to no longer respect there is no getting it back.

At first I answered 'given.' Then I read the specifics of the question. Oh. We are talking about politicians and public figures. OK, different situation. They have to earn the respect of the public. Changed my answer to 'earned.'

Normally, I offer people respect in the hopes that it will be returned. If it isn't then mine is withdrawn.

Sure, this creates a set up for being taken advantage of, but I certainly don't want to live life being afraid to interact with people until they 'prove themselves' to me.

The trick is to become adept at picking up on clues that respect is not being returned.

Basically, you put out good energy, you get good energy back. And visa versa.

It's kind of like smiling. You meet eyes with a stranger, or anyone, most people are either indifferent or look away. If you smile, you get a smile back from good people in a good mood. They would not smile at you unless you initiate it. If you don't smile first, you don't get to see as many smiles. If you do, you maximize the number of people smiling at you.

Life is good with lots of smiling.

I extend at least some respect until I learn that the person is a MAGA or some other form of shit heel.

Assumed until proven none existent ....

Kinda like the Constitution !
Innocent until proven guilty...
