President Obama said:Understand - I do not suggest that the debate surrounding abortion can or should go away. No matter how much we may want to fudge it - indeed, while we know that the views of most Americans on the subject are complex and even contradictory - the fact is that at some level, the views of the two camps are irreconcilable. Each side will continue to make its case to the public with passion and conviction. But surely we can do so without reducing those with differing views to caricature.
Is there a real chance that we can debate abortion without seeing the other side as villains? Can we debate the topic without emotions overwhelming respect for those who disagree with us?

Some can--most can't.
This from a person who has said abortion is murder. Rich.

civil discussion.
No. Can't be done.
The Left refuses to admit that abortion is the wilful destruction of human life.
Until they can face the facts of the matter, they will continue to respond to the issue with the hatred and vituperation they expend on all their issues.
Seeing as a majority of Americans are somewhere in the middle ground concerning views on abortion, I don't thing most people get passionate enough about the issue to truly degrade it to a personal one.
Case in point.
Felicity said:I don't doubt they never imagined the legal killing of human beings in the womb!
Felicity said:Miscarriages are not the intentional and puposeful killing of a human being.
Felicity said:It's manslaughter. Yup. see the last paragraph.
Felicity said:killing born people is called murder. What the hell. What aren't you understanding? Currently, if you kill a baby, it's called infanticide.
Hey guys....
I know this is a heated topic but can we keep the anger in threads actually about abortion please. I admit that this kinda makes the point I am asking about, but still...
Who here can say that abortion as a form of birth control is a morally wrong choice?
Sorry Redress - Here I'll get it back on topic :
He is and he isn't. As long as the majority of people behind the pro-life movements are Fundamentalist Christians then this will never be argued civilly. They simply do not care about people who do not follow their religious beliefs. Their argument is imposing. Instead of giving people the right to chose they argue that pro-choice means pro-abortion. Obama did get that the POVs are opposing.
No offense, Scarecrow, but you didn't.I can.
I think Catholicism is as strong a motivation as fundamentalist Christianity but ignoring that most pro-lifers are pro-choice. Pro the choice of the people in their states. They may want their state to ban abortion but they believe in choice, the choice of the state against a runaway federal gov't sticking its nose in where it isn't needed or allowed.Sorry Redress - Here I'll get it back on topic :

Then again, I'm a complete atheist.
So much for your argument.
Perhaps the rancor of the debate arises from the tendency of many on both sides to answer the questions they perceive in their minds than the questions actually asked of them.
I'm sneaky that way:mrgreen:Ok, now I am pissed...
We are not supposed to agree on stuff, and yet it is happening an awefull lot lately.
