Is it 'but ' or 'or'?

Is it:

  • Or

  • But

  • Something else

  • I don't know

  • I don't care

He says "but".

I think he misspoke, because his goal has obviously been to AVOID global confrontations and NOT to spread "Democracy" through armed interventions. Diplomatic? Probably.

Stop obsessing.

Hearing this word or that word is pointless bullshit. Meanwhile, there has been a coup by fascists. You took the bait from MAGA and are all up in arms over Trump being like what they accused Biden of. Try to stay focused on the crimes, not some stupid oh, the old dude has dementia. FFS with all of what MAGA Republicans have done you think attacking Ttrump like this is going to do a damn thing? Stop acting as if this is just another election that you have to disbarge the Republican incumbent. This is why attacking the person is bad debate form; it only gives them an excuse. And you fell for it.
To be honest, I don’t think there’s an exit off this roller coaster until this thing goes off the rails and it’s a crash and then we start counting bodies

🤷‍♀️

So I’ll be over here saying and doing whatever I like in the interim.

Tried to convince folks that the ride was a bad idea and they put us in it anyway. So here we are. If it makes you feel better to scold me, feel free to do such.

Doesn't look like you voted to me. It's only about whether he said thing A or thing B. There's a million other threads to discuss everything else trump related.
I didn't vote neither I don't participate in silly polls anymore.

He says or, because that is what it sounds like, and then you don't have to make up dumb excuses for why you think he says but. Occam's razor. If it's equally likely to be either, but one makes actual sense in context, and the other needs a crazy excuse or confirms a bias, it's most probable that he said what makes sense.

Let's get real here. It really doesn't matter what he said because Trump is not a serious person. Kermit The Frog gave a better commencement speech than Trump could ever give.

If it doesn't matter, that's what the other thread is for. The point of this thread is that it does matter because we have vastly different perceptions about it and this could happen with something that does matter and it would be helpful to have had previous experience deciphering this shit.

only Trump could trigger a thread over which word he used in a commencement speech.. Context is 100% "or/nor"
Conjunctions matter. Look at how the meaning can change with just that one little word for another.

Dude, he clearly says "but". It sounds nothing like "or".

THANK you. That's what I've been trying to tell people.

That's the McGurk Effect...
An auditory illusion.
Post 15 above
I don't think this is the McGurk effect since I can hear both "but" or "or" depending on which one I'm thinking about, even when I close my eyes.

I think in this case it's less about Trump and more of a fascination of how half the people listening can confidently say they hear one word, and the other half can confidently say they hear a different word.

They describe that in the video. That is the effect.

Watched it. In the video he is distinctly saying "ba", but when you change the video so that it looks like he is saying "fa", you hear that instead. When you close your eyes and remove the visual cue, you now hear "ba" again.

If the Trump commencement speech video were an example of the McGurk effect, you'd expect it to become more clear what he is saying when you close your eyes and remove the visual cue. But even when you do that it is not clear whether he is saying "or" or "but".

In my opinion this seems more likely to be an example of auditory pareidolia. What we're hearing is actually random/ambiguous, but because of your brain's desire to find patterns you hear "or" or "but" based on what it expects. What you expect to hear can be influenced by simply thinking about the word, or by a visual cue which is why I believe this is being mistaken for the McGurk effect.

I agree with the context, but this surprisingly does not seem to be about Trump beyond some more heavily biased comments. It appears to have more to do with which word people are focused on when watching. It's rather fascinating.

yes it became an interesting thread -much more then the OP topic itself

I ran it through AI several times and it also cannot distinguish between "or" and "but" which has me laughing pretty hard now. It seems we'll never know which it is with 100% certainty.

About half the time, AI thinks it is "but" and the other half it thinks it is "or," so I guess no one should feel bad for hearing either one.

Either or of course...:giggle:

I clearly heard "or". The obsession with drag shows cracks me up. Interesting the GOP is the only party to have had a criminal drag queen among its ranks. You work Kitara Ravache!

But... my life has been way to busy to keep up with current events of late and as a result I'm listening to the audio with virgin ears oblivious to any outside influences.

I am clueless why this is a poll question, but that is due to not having the bandwidth to be able to stay current currently.

Consider me the naive baseline if needs be.

All of that is assuming that the phrase in question was "But to promote democracy to anyone around the world 'at the point of a gun'"
