In a recent OP I stated that America was at risk of becoming a pariah state. Not surprisingly that statement was controversial and attracted immediate challenge.

So I thought I'd ask all the smart people on the forum what their thoughts were.

To be clear a pariah state doesn't mean a rogue state like Iran or a failed state like Yemen.

Here's a definition I think we can work with...

A "pariah state" refers to a nation that is widely rejected and isolated by the international community due to its policies, actions, or even its very existence.

The opinion piece in Newsweek below takes the position that America is already a pariah state.

As the second Trump administration lurches from one self-inflicted crisis to another in a seemingly relentless quest to destroy both the material and moral foundations of American power, Americans will need to get comfortable with their new status as denizens of a global pariah state. Gone is the hope that Donald Trump and his MAGA movement were some kind of aberration. Instead, leaders and ordinary people in other countries now see the United States for what it is and always might be—an aggrieved superpower drunk on resentment, besotted with tyranny, and seeking vengeance for mostly imagined slights, populated by people who either chose this sordid path or did not care enough to put up a fight.

We are going in that direction, no question. Our constant elections (next in 2026) keeps us barely above water in this age of Trump, and those who are unwilling to resist him in congress

in a few more years there will be no more 'America', or Russia, or any other country.

start there.

so don't worry about that too much. the world will merge into 10 Super nations we can all see on the Club of Rome and Technate maps i run on occasion. (let the ignorant mocking start with this)

basically our Orange Monarch is setting us up for this new world order when there are no more Sovereign nations any more. should happen fairly soon after we done with WW three, that is how this gets pushed thru.

if you want to merge with Canada and Greenland, you create a World War and then excitedly claim that 'we gotta stop all this war'.

so everybody gives up and does what the Orange Monarch, putin and china says. (and yes, putin gets ALL of eastern Europe, check the Club of Rome maps please)

well Allan, our 'smart people' here don't study tooo widely and reject considering the future direction of the world. note how they mock me for even trying to explain anything to them. groan.

Nah, we still have the 70+ million that will still infest this country that voted for him just waiting for the next fascist flavor of the week to pop up and speak to their worst impulses and characteristics.

other countries should probably start treating America like a paraiah state. Its going to hurt but we’re running out of options. America is not just, it is a very ungrateful country that is sole focused at staying at whatever top we think we’re at we will do literally anything to get there.

Not yet. We are still incredibly rich. We are like a pedophilic Saudi Arabian prince throwing around wads of cash. Everyone hates us and wants to keep their children away from us, but people will still deign to do business with us until we are broke. But once we are broke? Few will want to have anything to do with us.

Not yet, and I doubt that will happen despite Trumps efforts to make it one. The world needs the US needs the world. We will struggle through but America will never hold the stature it once did. Trumpers think that's good , they'll find out during his reign that it isn't.

"I have been to the mountain top, and I have seen the promises Trump won't deliver on. We may not get there, but not for Trump's lack of trying to make us a pariah state." ~ The Right Reverend Dr. Swami Suchabanana.

Like nobody, absolutely nobody forced us into this position where we are doing the most work. That comes with being the top world hegemony, we did that. The fact we are doing the most heavy lifting militarily and monetarily is something our politicians chose to do. You cant be the global hegemony without excessive public expenditure. Trumpists rather than just flat out admitting this, no they shout ungratefully at other countries pretending this shit isnt self inflicted.

We live in a world that is constantly at war or supporting proxy wars precisely because of our hegemonic status. We live in a world of zero sum games and we know it.

In order to stop this insane temper tantrum we are going to need a world based on cooperation, not endless geopolitical strife for national interests. An international if you will.

Hard to have pariah status when you're the global hegemon

We are one sunk aircraft carrier with all hands lost away from losing that status. And under Pete Hegseth, we might have just reached the requisite level of incompetence regarding operational security needed to lose one.
