What is US policy toward Latin America? Is there one? Should this be disturbing to Americans on the left and the right who love freedom and democracy? Also should it be disturbing that so many on the right in America don't even know that there is a difference between communism and democratic socialism? I personally find these things disturbing. Should I, or am i over reacting?

What is US policy toward Latin America?
Some cynical people say that American "policy" is to let people from Latin America come here!!!

As you know, our wonderful President and Vice President have said that the "secret"
is to help Latin Americans (especially in Central America) to develop their economies and to democratize their governments.

Other people say that the situation is really, well, hopeless.

Many Americans say that this nation's policy is, in effect, benign neglect. That is, do not interfere. If they ask for help, try to do so. Otherwise, keep our noses out of their business.

If you don't want Latin Americans flooding into the US, there is only one option: Foster freedom, democracy, and capitalism in Latin America. The amount of effort the US puts into this is inversely and directly proportional to the number of Latin American immigrants, both legal and otherwise, who are forced to come to the US for a better life.

I don't know about ALL of south America. But I know a little bit about Chile: and after Pinochet, I don't see them ever going to communism. Downtown Santiago is starting to look like downtown Boston, complete with its own business district and skyscrapers and Yuppie districts. There are all sorts of CEOs flying to the top of their skyscraper in their private helicopters, etc....

Democratic socialists are communists who want to you to think they love democracy so they put it in their name. If they ever take over your country don't look for any more meaningful elections.

I don't know about that. European social democracies seem to be the only functional democracies left in the world.

Although, to be fair, democratic socialists never staged an armed insurrection in order to attempt to install an unelected leader in the United States.

They would have if they could have. Too many private gun owners in the US for an armed insurrection to succeed.

Private gun owners weren't the ones who stopped the last one.

I wouldn't call Jan6 an armed insurrection. There was only one shot fired and that was by a capitol policeman. Sadly it hit the mark and a young lady died.

You don't have to actually fire your weapon to be considered armed.

You're right. Reports said one guy had a fire extinguisher he used to beat a guard. I hope they don't start having us register our fire extinguishers as deadly weapons. Other than that there were fewer shots fired on Jan6 than your average 2022 Chicago high school graduation ceremony.

Are the socialist democrats in the United States socialists like the European social democracies or communists. Bernie Sanders had his honey moon in Moscow. This leads me to believe he might be communist. Many things the social democrats in America say is far to the left of Sweden. The socialist democrats in the United States blamed NATO for Russia invading Ukraine. Sweden and Finland on the other hand want to join NATO. Columbia just elected a communist to lead their country. Mexico on the other hand elected a socialist and their economy is growing ever since. So what is going to happen to Columbia. Are they going to go the way of Venezuela where free and fair elections go out the widow to a dictator.

I doubt that. But at least we can agree that the one capitol police officer who did shoot and kill someone had a legitimate cause to do so. Killing a criminal invader in defense of our elected leaders who are actively threatened by a violent armed insurrection is a heroic thing to do, and he deserves a medal.

Let's hope not. Half of them are sneaking into this country!

I must have missed the capitol policeman's medal award ceremony where Speaker Pelosi praised him for his bravery. Did they interview him on 60 Minutes? I'd love to know more.

no it won't. You are forgetting that they are plenty of right-wing Latin Americans who, different from their American counterparts, are also more extreme and anti-democratic. And they are not too fond of the leftists running the countries now

No, but they should have. He deserves it.

When Bernie Sanders or AOC talk about socialism, they are referring to the Nordic model.

Now you may say that the Nordic model is not really socialism, and you may have a point there. But that just means that Sanders is using the word socialism a little differently than what you understand from it. That’s just a matter of semantic miscommunication and misunderstanding. Maybe it would create less antagonism from the right if Sanders just stopped using the word Socialism and referred to it as the Nordic model instead (it’s also sometimes known as the “third way” economic system).

No, but they should have. He deserves it.

He shot dead an unarmed Trump supporter so he's got that going for him. I'm thinking another national holiday in his honor why not?

I assume that applies to all the democratic socialist parties in Europe as well. We’re doomed!

An unarmed Trump supporter who was at the head of an armed mob that was violently breaking into the House Chamber where members of Congress were sheltering in place. And in doing so, he temporarily stopped that mob and bought time to evacuate those members of Congress. Her actions were unlawful and disgraceful. Her death was tragic, but of her own making. His actions were lawful and heroic.

You've been doing the rampant capitalism bit for decades to little effect. Maybe it's time to try the democracy and freedom part

I would argue you can't truly have the former without the latter.

Does it seem that we fall on one side or another when it comes to police shootings depending on who the person shot is of who we voted for. Cop shoots an unarmed black man and it’s because of racism, or the black man’s fault for being black. Unarmed white woman shot breaking through a door, and our view depends on whether we voted for Trump or not…
