“The Internal Revenue Service began sharing sensitive taxpayer data this week with immigration authorities searching for undocumented migrants, according to two sources familiar with the matter.

As part of President Donald Trump’s massive deportation push, the Treasury Department and the Department of Homeland Security signed an agreement in April to turn over information about undocumented immigrants who DHS says are already facing deportation orders and are under federal criminal investigation.”

They will use this information to hunt down undocumented immigrants.

One of the things that bugs me about immigration hardliners is this notion they put forward that undocumented immigrants live in a state of perpetual criminality. And one reason they give is they don’t pay taxes, and because they aren’t paying taxes that’s one of the reasons they have to be deported. They are lawbreakers and need to go!

Well, it was a lie. It was always a lie. They never cared about whether or not they were paying taxes, and this action by the Trump administration proves it.

They just don’t like them. It’s not more complicated than that.

So all the heinous criminals and worst of the worst were paying taxes? And contributing to Social Security that they would never receive? And doing jobs Americans won't?

What could go wrong?

So now we're going to lose laborers and tax dollars. Brilliant. Have I mentioned the birth rate in the U.S. is 1.6 per woman, well below the 2.1 needed to maintain the current population?

Whom do you mean by "these people," the people who have entered the country illegally?

Yes. Absolutely. 100%

They committed a minor crime, a misdemeanor most similar to trespassing which is handled, in most cases, not in a criminal court, but through civil procedures.

They are contributing to our society by working for us, and they’re also paying taxes!

So, yes, we should be the most lenient towards the ones FOLLOWING THE RULES.

But these will be the first to be deported now.

Very well, please cite the law that is being broken.

Did you vote for Trump in 2024?
No, I didn't, and I've never voted for Trump. I came the conclusion he was temperamentally unfit for the Office of President in 2015, and he's mostly confirmed that opinion ever since.

How is that question in any way relevant to what we're discussing?

It’s not, I’m just curious.

Trump or the undocumented immigrants, what are you talking about?
I think I misread your earlier post and thought you were asserting the act of sharing this information is against the law.

Regardless, It's not against the law, and there's nothing wrong with immigration authorities accessing this information as a means of enforcing immigration law. It doesn't matter if someone here illegally is doing nothing else wrong, they're still here illegally. If they wish to live here, they must leave and follow the rules for legal immigration.

Improper entry is a minor crime for which they can be legally forgiven.

We can choose not to deport the undocumented immigrants actually paying taxes. That's not illegal either. There is no legal mandate to hunt down the ones actually paying taxes. This is just a policy you support. You demand they be deported because you don't want them here.

This is bad policy. Especially, during a time of rising inflation in the services sector. It's self-defeating for another reason as well. It teaches undocumented immigrants to not follow the rules.

So what's the problem with that?

It’s bad policy. The law allows us to forgive their transgressions, and it makes sense to forgive people who are contributing to our society by working for us and who also pay their taxes. It’s especially stupid during a time of rising inflation in the services sector.
