A view of the F-35 production line in Fort Worth, Texas.

Interesting article and a good read (y)

Above is the P-38 Lightning. It's the reason the F-35 is the Lightning II.

The original Lightning was an extremely versatile aircraft that performed many roles, all them very well. It was perhaps the best U.S fighter, fighter/bomber, until the introduction of the P-51D Mustang late in the war.

Anyone have thoughts on the OP article?

A fine aircraft, and the one that was used to shoot down and kill Yamamoto - the architect of the attack on Pearl Harbor.

This is what Musk wants to scrap.

You know, based on his lifetime of military experience.

But spending money on people is "liberalism", or worse "Marxism"

I don't want that label!!! Fine, no helping people maintain a basic standard of living.

Is New Zealand still flying the P-38 Lightning as its main fighter aircraft?

That is way too advanced for here. About ten years ago the military made a big deal because we had all 14 of our helicopters airborne at the same time and in some show of force they flew over Auckland. Of course, none of them are actually armed with anything, just rescue kid, and such.

Not only does New Zealand lack fighter jets, but it also lacks submarines, destroyers, main battle tanks, and other capabilities most military forces have. During the Cold War, the New Zealand Air Force's combat capability was provided by Douglas A-4K Skyhawks and Aemacchi MB-339 trainers.

Just let us know when lockheed gets dropped from the contract and replaced, I am getting tired of them bragging about it, then not using it in combat because most of the fleet is non operational due to flaws, or lack of parts, or broken software.

Were it me I would kick out lockheed and put northrop in charge of the program and give them the money, they managed to design the b-21 raider in quick time with mostly their own money and it works vs another decade of I promise it will work we just need another 500 billion to fix the problems we charged you for 5 times already and have not fixed.

The A-4 series was a pretty durable aircraft. A-4Ms served in the USMC well into the 1980s and the Australian/New Zealand counterparts much further.

The RAN had no need for most of its fixed-wing aircraft after Melbourne was decommissioned in 1982, and two years later the ten remaining A-4Gs were sold to the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) for training purposes. Between 1986 and 1991 these aircraft were upgraded and re-designated A-4Ks. Two of the former A-4Gs crashed during 2001, resulting in the death of a pilot. The RNZAF's Skyhawks were retired in 2001. Eight A-4Ks, including six former A-4Gs, were sold to Draken International in 2012 and are in service supporting United States military training exercises.

Point is that the LAPD probably has a better army than we do...

If someone looks like they might need help just yell "Bootstraps!!" at them until they get the message.

The UK makes 15% of every f-35.
We're the only tier 1 partner nation.
