India was under pressure by both sides, the USA and China. Part of the Trump Indo-pacific plan was a geopolitical trade strategy aligning the United States with India. However, Beijing was pressuring India to reject alignment with the USA and form a mutually beneficial trade block with China.
India has rejected the Chinese plan and chosen to follow the USA model because access to the U.S. consumer base is the stronger economic influence.
The result? Once again, sad Panda.

"access to the U.S. consumer base"

This is why the entire world (including China) will eventually agree to Trump's terms.

Well.... as far as I'M concerned, they lost ME among their consumer base.

Remember: Everything Mr. Trump touches, dies. Why would India be the exception!

Wouldn't that mean the US will lose money because the tariffs won't be bringing in all of the money Trump promised?

Trump dodged a big one.

But let's not be fools. India is just not a manufacturing player.

No.

What it means is that the tariffs will persuade other countries to work out trade agreements that are more favorable to the US.

As an export destination, India is only a fraction of China. Chinas GDP is about 5 times larger than Indias. If we are effectively trading exports to China for slightly increased exports to India, I don't see that as much of a deal. Of course if we get both, that would be great.

Trump didn't promise favorable trade agreements, he promised that tariffs would make Americans rich.

When India opens their consumer market to American products, Americans will get rich by selling stuff to India.

That's what is meant by favorable trade deals.

I understand a lot of chinese companies are selling through other markets and then to the US. I wonder how all these regulations are being enforced. Small government repukes, LOL!!!!

lol... you really don't understand our current trade situation.
shrug...

Instead of uttering useless nonsense, if you disagree with me, tell me why.

I couldn't think of a thing I bought with a label that said, "Made in India." Possibly pashmina scarves for mom and sisters. Anyway...

India can't afford to buy American goods, and certainly not at some fantasy balance trade ideal that Trump is espousing. This is also applicable to China. The entire tariff thing is an utter debacle.

I am not seeing that much coverage of this yet, makes it suspect.
Here's something from 6 hrs ago

India, US close in on trade deal? In trade discussions with the US, India has put forward a proposal for zero-for-zero tariff arrangements on specific items including steel, auto parts and pharmaceuticals, based on reciprocity and limited to certain import volumes, according to sources with knowledge of the matter.
