A sweeping farm bill failed in the House on Friday in a major embarrassment to GOP leaders who were unable to placate conservative lawmakers demanding commitments on immigration.

then later:

The outcome exposed what is becoming an all-out war within the House GOP over immigration, as well as the the intractable divisions within the GOP conference that have bedeviled House Speaker Paul D. Ryan (R-Wis.) and will be certain to dog both the top lieutenants in line to replace him, Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) and Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.).

With moderate Republicans maneuvering to force a vote on legislation offering citizenship to some younger immigrants who arrived in the country as children, conservatives revolted. The farm bill became a bargaining chip as they lobbied leadership for a vote on a hard-line immigration bill.

Yes, this is an embarrassment for the GOP, no question. But the Democrats are being just as hard headed as the Republicans were the entire time Obama was President.

Will this madness ever end?

Republicans control congress and they still can't get anything passed. The only thing they could get through was the tax bill and even that was a huge internal battle. This has to be the most unproductive congress in decades.

My understanding is that the Speaker as well as the next Speaker would never allow a Dreamer bill to go to vote because it would certainly pass, and the revolt among the Republican voter base would be extraordinary.

Given that the Republicans control the House, Senate AND the White House, I'd have to call it the most unproductive Congress in history.

New polling suggests Trump voters would also back another controversial pledge the president has yet to fulfill: protecting the so-called Dreamers.
A survey slated for release Tuesday by Republican polling firm TargetPoint Consulting found 86 percent of Trump supporters would approve of a deal that increased border security in exchange for a pathway to citizenship for DACA recipients.

You're welcome.

It finally comes full circle, the collision of several subjects... farm subsidies, low income food assistance, and immigration, turns a piece of legislation into a circus.

But as the article points out, the legislation itself even if passed is pretty much a nonstarter in the Senate.

Waste... pure, waste... Republicans will have to explain this and many other things here in just a few months.

Well haven't they given us one of the biggest deficits yet? So at least they're good at spending.

They will certainly have to explain all of this come November.

Well, if your Congressman is a Republican, write him and tell him to help get that bill to vote.

And if your congressman is a Democrat, you be sure to ask them to stop obstructing border security funding so that a deal can be made for a pathway to citizenship for DACA(s).

Thank you.

By "border security funding" I believe you mean the wall. Not my priority, so no thanks.

This why these rider bills are stupid.
there is no reason that immigration
should be on a farm bill.

The "all out war" situation the GOP is in seems to be the result of their own gerrymandering, which has allowed a reasonably large number of far right nuts to have seats. The dems would likely have the same issue if they had been as successful at gerrymandering as the GOP.

I don't see it moderating or ending any time soon. The right wing plutocrats love those far right nut jobs, for very obvious and very selfish reasons. Anyone that tries to "moderate" will get an attacking candidate with plutocrat money behind them in the next cycle.

Agreed, just as stupid as attaching an entitlement/food stamp rider to our farm and forestry bill.

Tell Trump to hurry up and get that money from Mexico for the wall. He promised that MEXICO was going to pay for it NOT the taxpayer. Tell Trump to quit lying then. YOU'RE WELCOME!

Not any time soon. Both parties are suffering from factions that are tearing them both apart, along with the country.

Spoken like a true partisan. Here's an idea, how about moderate Democrats working with Moderate Republicans and throwing the Freedom Caucus out the back door. Instead, Democrats just watch and laugh.

Don't agree. The biggest part of the Republican voting base is fine with immigration reform, including DACA. Hell, Trump is actually fine with immigration reform. He just wanted Congress to do it legally instead of an unconstitutional Obama executive order. Republicans are dead set against illegal immigration though.

Nope as soon as Trump gets that money from MEXICO to pay for the wall, HE CAN HAVE IT. NOWHERE did he state during his campaign that the american taxpayer will pay for it first and THEN later on MAYBE he'll get the money from Mexico at a later date. No, he said he was going to have MEXICO pay for it, so then GET ER DONE con and get that money from Mexico!

That'd be great! First they have to put some sensible bills through, not the hyper-conservative tea party garbage they've been trying to get through and can't even agree on.

They did and Trump said he would refuse to sign it if he didn't have his wall. Trump LIED.

Why should I tell him?...You tell him.

Unfortunately the food stamps are part of what is known as "farm welfare". That actually belongs there.

Immigration is a stretch.

If you don't like "riders", read some "omnibus" bills. They usually pass one at the end of every year, and all of the port in the world gets thrown in. Then it gets signed right before Christmas when they think no one is looking.

The moderate Republicans need to do a much better job of shunning the clowns in the Freedom Caucus who are, IMO, out of control. The moderate Dems, to your point, need to join ranks with the moderate Republicans to accomplish this.
