Can you go to jail for life for posting hateful content online?

I read it somewhere, not sure how true this is.

You sure you want to get legal advice here?

Potentially

If you advocate for genocide yes you can.

If you say group x is evil, but don't advocate for harm to come to group x not likely

I am curious as to the definition of hateful content online by Canadian statute.
Do you have some examples?

Not for life as the OP suggested. 2 years max.

CTV News states it could be lifetime for advocating for genocide. I don't watch CTV News anymore so I can't say how truthful they are

. It would also allow a judge to impose lifetime imprisonment for advocating genocide

Speech considered worthy of action includes anything that would "portray groups as inherently violent, as unhuman and worthy of execution or banishment," an official said.

It would not include content that criticizes or belittles a group and attacks its dignity through jokes, ridicule or insults. Content that argues for taking away the rights of a group would not meet the bar as "detestation or vilification" either, the official said.

According to CTV new

I can insult Group X saying they have the brains of a turnip and smell like pigs without getting in trouble

If however I say group X are like rats and need to be exterminated, then I can get in trouble.

That's a proposed amendment to the current law I linked to in Post 3.

The current law's max is 2 years.

Not the case. If you say group x (say Jews) are pigs it's an offence under the current law.

Really?

So if someone says, "Jews like to talk in an intentionally complicated way so as to appear smarter", can he be sent to jail?

No. Read the law linked in Post 3.

You asked what the law is - go look.

They don't list scenarios. And I have a particular instance that I want to know if it's legal or not.

Here's the scenario to avoid (in bold):

319 (1) Every one who, by communicating statements in any public place, incites hatred against any identifiable group where such incitement is likely to lead to a breach of the peace

Sounds like a very broad law. Anything someone says that they dont like, they just need to say, "this breaches peace!" and then throw him in jail.

You are hugely out of your element in a legal sense if you think that's how laws are enforced.

Just post the scenario you're talking about.

It is open to abuse, but any arrest that truly was not warranted would allow for suing

If, as your opinion implies, you think this law is too open ended and could be subject to abuse; how many cases of "abuse" of this law have we seen since it's genesis?

As you claim to be, I'm merely curious. ;)

I don't understand your zeal to insult me. I don't remember hurting your feelings before.
