I uttered these words, "I don't like Trump," to a couple of co-workers and they automatically assumed I was a Democrat. NOTE: I do IT Administration for a large religious charity so it's a pretty conservative organization. This is what it's come down to. WTF?! Does the base even recognize other people are running? Not to the general public. I think Trump has broken politics. Trump has got the angry poor working class wrapped around his old, pudgy fingers. This is the end result of the GOP Civil War. All the RINO name-calling combined with the faction of NO. Of which we more moderate/establishment Republicans have been dealing with for the past 8 years. It has all come down to this... I was having a similar discussion with FT over on the John Kasich thread about it and he summed it up pretty well too:
Indeed it would be. I no longer have confidence that the Republican Party voting base is thinking about strong tickets or strong governance.

I uttered these exact words to a couple of co-workers and they automatically assumed I was a Democrat. Fact is the GOP has put forth way too many moderate presidential candidates who were losers.

Most of the people who call themselves Republicans want to win this time around

By nominating someone even more moderate?

I live in a pretty conservative place and I don't know anyone who likes Trump and very few who are going to vote for him if he is the GOP nominee.

I don't like Trump either but I actively hate Hillary and Bernie with a passion. There are no good choices this election cycle, only various degrees of bad ones.

Come over to the dark side and vote for Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson. I haven't voted GOP since Bush started that war.

Someone with no experience in the political system?

A lot of conservatives don't want to admit this, but the Tea Party was a big reason why Trump isn't being completely isolated by either the "establishment" or the Cruz voters. Populism overtook small government ideology long ago. The Tea Party express and Sarah Palin jumped on board the Tea Party, never really admiring the initial core of Dick Army-ites and libertarian conservatives, but still driving it up the wall to peak success. The main message of that group has been: experience bad, inexperience good. Despite chants to the contrary, with the rise of the Palin and Tea Party Express, many Tea Partiers did not want substantial entitlement reform. They wanted it kept for those "who deserve it."

This meshed well with those independent, non-politically active white blue collar folks who similarly disdained experience and those "who don't deserve it."

Enter Donald Trump. Then watch the relatively buddy-buddy relationship between he, Cruz, and Carson. Sure, Cruz now argues that Trump isn't a real conservative, but he was happy enough to not shun Republicans and conservatives alike from finding something to like about Trump. They all wanted the same anti-knowledge, pro-pitchforks and torches voters.

Not going to say that. Trump, by his own admission, has dealt with politicians and world business leaders on a regular basis.

But he has never been in a position of politics and has no knowledge of the intricacies of governing.

the only trump supporters I have personally met voted for Obama.

I"m not a Trump fan, but I will do what is necessary to deny Hillary or Bernie the WH. I'll hate myself later, but not as much as I'd hate myself if I unwittingly helped either of those two nuts get the job. They both failed my interview. Trump only got a "D" on it, but a "D" is better than an "F", so there ya have it.

If one person does not deserve it, who determines who deserves what? Either everyone is worth somthing, or no one is.

Funny, you're hearing it, but still not quite getting it. The GOP civil war is over the moment Trump becomes the candidate and that's looking like a done deal. The message is clear to all our politicians - we don't like what you've been doing. Party membership and ticking boxes while you do NONE of what we want is no longer going to save you.

How many decades have you heard voters say, "we should just vote the bastards out and start anew with someone who will at least try to do what we want, even if he fails"? We're finally doing it. This is the party membership taking their party back. Don't care if the party we wanted all along isn't your view of what the party should be - we're taking it back. The evangelicals are willing to go secular, every segment of the party is onboard, and we're not backing down.

To the bolded:

Or perhaps, for many that have felt disenfranchised and marginalized for a while now, *politics was broken* and Trump is *fixing* it!

There's often more than one POV to any given issue, particularly a political issue!

You can thank Obama for Donald Trump.

I'm a Republican, and I detest Trump.

And there are many more who don't, and some that do, who are still voting for him anyway. Sorry. Hey if it helps, I detested Reagan when he ran.

that's what they say until they get in the privacy of the voting booth. You'd be surprised by how many closet Trump supporters are out there. Well...maybe not surprised because he is trouncing the competition in the primaries.

I don't care.

Trump and his base are giving the middle finger to DC & the media, and it's been a blast to sit back and watch.

Do I believe much of what Trump say's....not really, but I love the show

The democrats want their candidate to run against another Romney who was spineless.

The GOP wants to commit suicide in front of it's base.

LOL..........stay tuned!

the only trump supporters I have personally met voted for Obama.

Which makes me wonder why Texas has had an OPEN primary since 2000.

Not to mention proportional--unless a candidate gets 50%--which looks out of reach for Cruz now .

You must have been happy when Reagan picked "voodoo" Bush as his VP .

None of my friends I know like Trump. Honestly if he gets the ticket I might become a Democrat (at least for this election haha).

Definitely not. Although the elder Bush did have his moments as POTUS. I've always been extremely suspicious of the CIA goobers. I do not at all like how they are used or that they betray their mission what seems like constantly.
