The list of the candidates is still open. So this is just a provisional first poll in that matter.
I have chosen 6 candidates - 3 ladies and 3 gentlemen.

Other, because I'd probably vote Melenchon in the first round if I was French. Probably.

I voted for Marine Le Pen because it's the coolest sounding name on the list.

In alphabetical order:

Nathalie Arthaud - Lutte Ouvrière
François Asselineau - Union populaire républicaine
Xavier Bertrand - Divers
Nicolas Dupont-Aignan - Debout la France
Jean Lassalle - Résistons
Marine Le Pen - Rassemblement national
Jean-Luc Mélenchon - La France insoumise
Jean-Frédéric Poisson - VIA, la voie du peuple
Philippe Poutou - Nouveau Parti anticapitaliste
Fabien Roussel - Parti communiste français
Arnaud Montebourg - L'Engagement
Anne Hidalgo - Parti Socialiste

They all have declared their candidacy.

Where would it go? Provence, right at the coast.

@ cool sounding names

Whatever his polititcs might be, I find this name also cool sounding:

Emmanuel Jean-Michel Frédéric Macron

The name may be very cool sounding.
What about the person?
Do you know her?
Do you find her "cool" personally as well?
I have no idea what the person is like and haven’t met or worked with her. Lately I am trying to cut down on carbs, wine and face-to-face interactions with French politicians.

French political parties appear to rise, dissolve, morph with dizzying rapidity. Even when they don't morph they change names.

Hands down I liked Nikolas Sarkozy and his Les Republicains. I am not sure which party is the closest successor to the Les Republicains.

I voted François Asselineau as a quick google appears to suggest to me as ideologically close to Sarkozy. Problem is he appears to lack the good looks, elegance and swagger of Sarkozy.

Now: 2 out of 5 say:

Marine Le Pen - Rassemblement national

I would vote for Marine le Pen if she can overcome the second round obstacle of anybody but a le Pen. In that sense le Pen's situation is not unlike that of Trump in the US, they are fantastic at whipping up and coalescing the opposition against them. And I say that as a Trumpista. In the end there is no substitute for victory. It is a winner take all system. No consolation prizes for second place.

So it is.
And in order to become President of France, Monsieur Macron just founded a party of his own - from scratch.
And he succeeded.

I wonder if such a thing could happen in the US?

I seriously doubt that. Ross Perot, before his Mad Hatter side took over and crashed him, was gonna do a serious solo run for the White House. But even then he didn't start from scratch. Independents in the US still ride the coattails of the major political parties.

Yes!
Even though he has not yet declared that he would be a candidate.
Don't know why he wouldn't, to my knowledge En Marche does not have an heir apparent to run instead.
