Angela Merkel addressed the Bundestang, taking a hard line against the democratic decision of the people of the UK, mentioning privileges that would be withdrawn from Britain.
It was the same day that we were reminded, as if we needed reminding, of the violent potential of her bizarre open border policies in the deadly attack at the Istanbul airport. Repeated terrorist attacks in Europe have confirmed the fears of Leave voters in the UK. By God, they were right, and they were right to decide that leaving the EU was the only way to protect their home, not less their jobs and economic wellbeing.
But according to the geniuses among the pundit class, worries about immigration are nothing more than racism and xenophobia.
And an uncontrolled flood of illegal immigration of Merkel's sort is nothing to worry about. Even as you see the violence all over Europe and in your own communities.
Yet again we see that if the elites of the EU had taken the concerns of ordinary people seriously and had acted to address them a Brexit could have been avoided and threatened further breakup of the EU would not be a worry.
And she is right.
What open border policies? You are making things up. Merkel said Germany would take refugees.. not migrants. They are in the process of deporting a huge number of migrants, all of the illegal. Also there were far more terror attacks in the 1970s-90s than there are now.
It is. That is very clear thing coming out of the Brexit vote. The attacks against Muslims in the UK has gone up 200% in a year, and the amount of xenophobic and racist attacks since Brexit has exploded in numbers. It has to do with anti- Muslim views, people of colour and general fear of anyone foreign.. aka xenophobia.
Wait what? You were talking about immigration, and suddenly you switch to illegal immigration? Big difference. No country in Europe welcomes illegal immigration. Merkel has never been "pro illegal immigration". Germany are kicking more and more illegals out. Can they do more? Yes, but it does require them changing the laws so places like Algeria become "safe place". This has and is being done.
So called ordinary people have been misled.. as we have seen with the Brexit vote. The far right uses fear to promote their policy of hatred and xenophobia. It is a typical method of gaining power by minority groups. Hitler did it very well.
Merkels stance on Brexit is the correct one, and a wise one.
First off demanding that the Brits get on with it is a political wise choice. And it is a ploy, because she and others know very well that the Brits cant get on with it, because of the political disaster that is currently going on in the UK.
Secondly the delay by the Brits increases the insecurities for companies in the UK. Hence the longer it goes on, the more the chance that companies move their businesses to the EU. The union of car manufactures has stated that access to the common market is key for its members.. Gove one of the PM candidates is against the common market. Hence the 800k+ jobs in the industry are under serious threat of moving to Europe. The longer the political instability goes on in the UK, the bigger and bigger the chance that the production moves. Another company that is seriously thinking of moving is Vodafone.. which would be politically a slap in the face, since Vodafone was started in the UK.
So you can, along with your right wing friends, continue bang on about how bad the EU is (but the US is great... right?) and it will collapse.. the same thing they have been saying for 2 decades now.. but the reality is that the country that is closer to break up is the UK, and not the EU.
And she is right.

Merkel's rhetoric now though indicates that she has learned nothing from this disaster. She still thinks her policy is right. And so does the rest of the EU bureaucracy, which is going on as if nothing happened. It portends further disintegration of the EU.

I'll need some citations for the stuff about illegal immigrants being deported from the EU.
What's the difference between large numbers of refugees and large numbers of immigrants? They are pretty much the same thing.
Violence against immigrants? Who could have foreseen that? I mean to say, take away people's jobs, make it hard for them to find a place to live, etc., and who would have guessed that people would get angry?
I can't think of a single wave of immigrants in the US that wasn't met by a prejudice, bigotry, and occasional violence. Nevertheless, a source for that would be nice. Official reports only, please.
Regardless of what Germany is doing about immigrants it's obviously not enough. Where are these crowds of people storming the Chunnel entrance in France coming from?
There are already a lot of immigrants in the UK who are driving wages down and housing prices up and straining infrastructure and support services. People are supposed to be accepting of many more immigrants?
Elites are really good at insulting ordinary people and dismissing their concerns. They still haven't learned a thing. The traditional remedy for this was to hang a few of the leaders and scribes from the lamp posts and then the rest fall in line. I hope it doesn't come to that sort of thing.
You sound like the propaganda drumbeat. The simple fact at this moment is that the next UK government has the okay by referendum to option out of the EU. *)
*)What is, by the way, the legal status of the extra concessions made before the referendum. I have not seen the text, have you?
Until then, it is able to influence EU decisions from within and block them, where unanimity is required.
As the EU members well know, they have to change the EU considerably or risk losing control to popular and/or progressive movements and parties all around the continent.
They also know how embarrassing and potentially dangerous flirting with Scotland could become as separatist movements within member states see this too. So the EU must get moving to save the present elite and possibly even the project. And the UK is in side.
So let's see, what happens. The first fights are breaking out and the EU is demonstrating the main problem with it and for it and its populations quite nicely.
What are you talking about? The deal the UK made before the referendum? That is null and void.
