"Despite Trump casting a bright light on the immigration enforcement agency, the reality inside ICE offices is very dark. With high expectations, shifting priorities and a heightened fear of losing their job, morale is low and the pressure is high, officials told The Atlantic.

“It’s miserable,” a career ICE official told the magazine, characterizing the task as “mission impossible.”

Another former investigative agent told the magazine: “Morale is in the crapper.”

The ex-official added: “Even those that are gung ho about the mission aren’t happy with how they are asking to execute it—the quotas and the shift to the low-hanging fruit to make the numbers.”

Although the administration pledged to arrest “the worst of the worst,” data last month shows ICE has arrested just a small fraction of those convicted of serious crimes, such as murder and sexual assault. For example, of the 13,000 undocumented immigrants in the U.S. who were convicted of murder, the agency had arrested just 752 of them from October 1 to May 31. Instead, data suggests the agency has arrested a large portion of non-criminals since Trump took office. Of the arrests from Trump’s inauguration through early May, 44 percent had a criminal conviction, 34 percent had pending charges and 23 percent had no criminal history, ABC News reported. After Memorial Day, the portion of non-criminal arrests spiked; 30 percent of those arrested had criminal convictions, 26 percent faced pending charges, while 44 percent had no criminal history."

I'll bet. Imagine joining the agency to protect America from foreign threats and they send you out to nap people looking for work at Home Depot.

Well, at least they can hide their shame with masks.

Btw, should it be legal for unidentified, mask-wearing thugs to kidnap people off the street?

If the people they were kidnapping were so dangerous, why didn't they pull out a gun and shoot any of the ICE agents? It would be justifiable.

Early einsatzgruppen members suffered from low morale.

Oh well. They can quit and get real jobs. Or become whistleblowers, and make up for some of the damage done. But, otherwise, **** those guys.

It is easy for ICE to have low moral, they know how they are going about this only makes MAGA white nationalists happy.

ICE's mission: Mission (emphasis added): Protect America through criminal investigations and enforcing immigration laws to preserve national security and public safety.

"...to preserve national security and public safety.

By arresting fruit and vegetsble pickers?

Yes. Do you think those smuggling themselves into the country to cause problems are going to be wearing black masks and sporting combat gear?

Gosh, all this bad news. We should stop enforcing immigration law.
This is what you get when you impose quotas on law enforcement to meet political objectives. All they care about is getting those numbers up. They don't care how. It's classic authoritarianism.

Are you sure it's not just a target rich environment?

ICE has won the left's ire not because it's strayed from its mission, but rather because it's begun to fulfill its mission.

I am sure, because they're also going after people with visas. They're finding any excuse to grab people off the street and put them on a plane. Because they want big numbers. That's what Trump promised, and he doesn't care how ICE delivers. Just that they do.

If the visas are valid and they've done nothing to warrant suspension of the visa then, ultimately, there will be no problem. But I think what you're likely reading in the news are enforcement mistakes being used as an argument against immigration law enforcement full stop. My answer there is no, we need to enforce immigration law, and to expect perfection as a requirement of that enforcement is ridiculous.

As a comparison, one can find news accounts of the wrong person being arrested for a murder. That is not an argument in favor of ignoring laws against homicide.

I completely disagree. I don't think these are mistakes. I think this a deliberate effort to spread fear among the immigrant population in America. The message is unmistakable.

"Don't step out of line, or else."

Like I said, classic authoritarianism.

Of course you think that. But your thoughts are not persuasive.

I didn't really expect your principles to be worth anything. You might talk a big game against authoritarianism. But when push comes to shove, you're just another stormtrooper.
