Seriously. Many districts across the country are dealing with teacher shortages and substitute shortages. Why not make it a civic duty of the district you live in? Of course, not everyone would be qualified to sub - a vetting process would have to be in place similar to juries. How do you think you would fare if you were called in to teach kindergarten or 6th grade one day?
 
An understatement if ever there was one....

I'm not sure very many of us have the Master's Degrees in the relevant subjects/in Education that many if not most of today's teachers have earned.

Our kids deserve to have professionals teach them. Our society needs and deserves this, too.

Once DOGE gets done, there will be no public education in the US. Rich kids will be educated at good Christian schools, and the rest will be working black jobs to harvest the crops.

Been there done that............challenging yet fulfilling
 
My family used to direct our state 'OMSI chess tournament' where Oregon public schools would send their chess teams to compete. Ages 6-12 came in the door at 8:am and the tournament went on until about 5 or 6 pm. Add our travel time and set up and take down time, and we had a very long day. I have never experienced physical headaches like those annual events produced. I resented breathing in and out but I had to keep working and smiling.

And if you think those kids were the biggest source of stress, you never met coaches and parents!

I think I will say no to the substitute teaching challenge.
 
Never taught, but was asked to give lectures to the business class at the local high school for a number of years

First year, it was rough....i was used to speaking to adults....not 14-16 yr old kids

To say that i thought i bombed that first year would have been an understatement

My niece helped me out when i told her my experiences....and she gave me some great ideas

After i made a number of adjustments on presentation, and toned down how much detail i had initially gone into, it was a wonder they werent all asleep....i did much better for the next few years, and every year, added something to surprise the classes....it turned out to be a lot of fun

But whether or not, people off the street with little or no education would be sufficient for even substitute teaching, i say nay.....it takes a lot of preparation and skill
 

It does take a lot of preparation and skill if it's something you do every day. This would just be 8 hours probably once in your lifetime.

Yeah, you shouldn't be chosen since you seem to think all kids are "brats".
 

Sure. But this is just one school day out of your lifetime. Not asking people without degrees to teach class for the entire school year (even though we already do that..............................).
 
I, also, have done that. I was far too young when I did it (in my 20's) and the kids rode roughshod over me. (I got my first masters' degree at 24.)
Later, when I had taught school and been a mother, when I went into a classroom things were entirely different.
 


We already have juries composed of people who aren’t smart enough to figure out how to get out of jury duty…what could possibly go wrong with putting them in charge of classrooms?

As substitutes.

Can we put cameras in these classrooms? Because the hilarity that would ensue could really rack up some ratings.
