I have suspicion that there is soon going to be epic pressure on Thomas and Alito to retire

Like it or not, Trump appears to be back.

Republicans will have a comfortable Senate majority.

I think the Federalist Society will be all over Thomas and Alito to retire, particularly Thomas.

I would expect at least one of them to retire at the end of the October 2024 Term.

I haven't though about it but I think you're right. Unless they pull off a Ruth Ginsburg and refuse to retire and die in office.

They are both similar to Ginsburg in that respect. Neither wants to go, ever, and I suspect it will take a lot of badgering to get them to leave.

I don't think so. They're only in their mid 70's and there have been much older justices. They could easily make it 2 more presidential terms.

Thomas is a black man of Gullah ancestry. I would not gamble on him surviving ONE more Presidential term, let alone two.

And perhaps they should remember how Scalia dropped dead like a bolt out of the blue.

So much for the vapid idea of adding additional justices to the Court.

I'm not sure they will not choose to retire on their own now that a republican President will be making the appointments and will have the Senate to approve the nominations.

Priority one is to replace John Roberts.

Don’t they need a pardon from their immunity potus as well.

Roberts is the only who used to have a decent legacy.
He sold out to the fraudulent five to keep his CJ.

Maybe, as their replacements are guaranteed to be Republicans.

Congress should pass the Democrat bill to expand SCOTUS to 15 judges and let President Trump fill them all.

Thomas is an exceedingly stubborn human being. This is not implausible.

What exactly -happened- to him? Don't remember what his official cause of death was.

Actually, I would prefer that Congress abolish two seats, by attrition, permanently setting the court at 7 seats. A 7 seat court would be more efficient and collegial. The vast majority of States have 7 justices.

Even if the next 2 Justices to leave were Republican, it would still leave them with a 4 to 3 majority.

7 sounds about right, with mandatory re-selection every 4 or 5 years.

My guess, Alito and Thomas will retire within the first 2 years. Roberts in year 3.

This is what the Federalist Society will want; so it will be done.

Traitor Trump will end up putting 6 Justices on the Court.

I agree with this. I don't think there will be any pressure on them (and I really hope not), but I think they will likely ponder if it feels like a time they might want to retire. If they don't want to, I hope NO Republican badgers them to do so.

36 years, 7 months

That is the longest Supreme Court tenure, set by William O. Douglas.

Thomas is at 33 years.

Don't go out like Douglas did. In the last few months of Douglas's tenure, Chief Justice Burger postponed all cases in which Douglas vote was decisive, knowing that Douglas was not competent to be on the court by that time. Finally was able to badger him into retiring.

Brennan and Marshal also outstayed their mental competency, their law clerks essentially performing their jobs in their final years.

SCOTUS will be red for the next 40 years, imo.
Sotomayer is reported to be in poor health.
